Shipping A Betta

HI everyone,

I'm considering moving in the near future and have some questions about shipping a betta to myself. I'm finishing up my degree and am looking to pursue a career abroad. I'd love to continue fish keeping wherever I go (and possibly get a doggo), but I have concerns about having to transport him wherever I go.

Is it possible to ship a fish safely? I know retailers do it all the time, but is that a commercially available option to the public? I have time to save up funds for it so I'm not too concerned about the price. I just want to make sure my betta would be safe.

If it is possible, do you guys have recommendations for companies to do business with? Or any tips in general to keep this as low stress of an experience for my betta and me? Thanks!

Depending on where you go there can be very strict rules about importing live animals. That's more of an issue that the betta surviving. They are regularly shipped across the world.

What types of things should I look into/anticipate? It's possible I will stay within the U.S. but go to the opposite coast. Ideally, if I play my cards right, I'll go to New Zealand or Australia so those are the places I'm anticipating on shipping a betta to.

You need a special permit for International shipping.

I'm guessing that permit is rather expensive. Do you have an idea of what it's called? I'd like to at least look into it.

Sorry not to sure there but that's the reason why many breeders can't ship to Canada....
Ok ive looked and only found it for Canada. There is USA ones, seems to be each mail system has their own guidelines.

Okay, thanks for the heads up! That makes things easier to narrow down. I realize pursuing this is jumping through a lot of hoops, but it won't kill me to do some reading.

A lot of reading. Some Airlines actually let you take bettas on board.

To ship internationally you go threw a trans shipper. They already have the permits and the experience to have a trouble free delivery. I personally have never dealt with any but places like aquabid use them al the time.

I considered that, but I'm not sure I trust myself. I've done it before and I felt so bad. Granted, my betta was in a Gatorade bottle and had to be hidden in my bag the whole time (airline didn't know I had him), but still.

I'll have to look into that, too. I'm not opposed to reading. I think I'd just feel more comfortable with letting someone with experience handle this. Hopefully they'll work with a rando from the public???
