Hi everyone, I have a cycled planted tank with some large lava rocks that have been in it for several months. A friend is starting a new tank- would giving him these rocks be good for seeding his new tank? Or would it do nothing?
thanks!

It would be good to get your friend’s cycle going. Any cycled media is great to seed a new tank.

I don't see how it could hurt, just make sure its stays wet/submerged the whole time, and ideally only with a short transport time.

Think about giving him some filtermedia from yours. That will seed the filter faster than some lavarocks from the tank itself.

What I normally do is keep an extra sponge filter or two in tank and move it to a new tank when i want to cycle it. A good quality sponge filter can hold a lot of bacteria.

To be honest I'm not sure if lava rock sitting in the tank has a lot of bacteria - it does no harm but i'm not sure how effective such will be.
