I have decided on 30-40 gallon for my 2nd tank. I want to do a planted set up.

Plans
Plants:
Java Moss, Christmas Moss
Java Ferns, Anubias, Dwarf Water Lilies
A type of carpet moss

Fish:
Guppies 3-4 F 1 M
Red Eye Tetra 6-10
Undecided Corydoras
Undecided Shrimp

aquasoil substrate

Where I need help is deciding the filter type, filter media, how to cycle the tank with the plants ?

Christmas moss has higher light demands than the other plants, which will do well in low to medium light.

For the filter try to get one that cycles at least 5 times your tank's capacity; oftentimes it is cheaper to get a canister filter, and canister filters often achieve higher turnover rates than HOB filters. Canisters also allow the injection of CO² through the outflow if desired and have more options to customize filter media.

It is perfectly safe to cycle a tank with plants in. This period also allows time for plants to adjust and settle in. Cycle as you normally would.

So a canister filter would be best for this tank and the fish ?

Just based on my experience, I prefer canister filters. They are quieter, take up less space in the aquarium, powerful, and have multiple stages of filtration.

Another vote for canisters, they're the next best thing to a sump and probably the best bang for your buck. Have you thought about what type of lighting you want?

I ended up just getting 2 hang on back filters.

As for lighting I'm currently using a 24" t8 max plant grow bulb by zoo med
