I got a tank today and it 7.9 gallons.
it 18 inches long and 9 inches thick.
my question is that can I divide that tank in two and keep 2 betta in this tank?

How tall?
In my opinion yes you can, though of course a single betta will always be happier with the extra space

Congrats It's certainly large enough for 2 bettas. Make sure your divider is not transparent!

Your choice. Is there a reason you're having doubts?

make sure that both sides are going to stay warm enough from your heater and that both sides are being cleaned by some sort of filter. I recommend getting two small sponge filters one for each side and running one air pump. I feel that would be most efficient for you and your fish. Just a suggestion.

the water stay around 82° aadjusting to room temperature with heater. yes I got separate filters for them and will be placing 1 air bubble on each side. now only need to get suggestions on sand and planting the tank.

2 Would be ok but of course just 1 in a larger tank would be happier.
If you do divide it I would just do males as females are more active with shorter fins. Just don't do a male and a female.

Why not start with one then after about a month if you think it would be fine in a smaller space then you can divide the tank and add another?

20170429_181334.jpg here are the pics and for the size of betta you can see in the second picture where the white flag is. I know the filter is small I figured it out yesterday so will be getting a new soon and have 2 air bubblers on each side. I have decided to put black sand with plants(still do decide which is the best avialable at the lfs) and make hidding spot for the bettas. any other sugesstions are welcome. thanx in advance
