29 Gallon Tank Setting Up A New 29 Gallon Tank

Theres a few ways to do it, your room has a lot of ambient light, and between that and the aquarium light, going to be way overkill.

What I do. I turn my light on at 5:30AM for first feeding and run it until 11-12 and 2nd feeding. it gets turned off by noon. I turn it back on for an hour for 3rd feeding around 3-4pm, then it's off until about 8pm, then I turn it on for 4th feeding and leave it on until I'm ready to go to bed and then it's lights out for the night.

Overall, it's on for like 10-11 hours, but it's off when the ambient light in the house is brightest, and it's got interruptions that algae can't really use through the day being it's a simple organism and has trouble starting photosynthesis when light isn't consistent. it can't turn on and off like more complicated plants can so easy.

Anyways a schedule like that works for me, no algae at all. lights are still on a lot without being on all the time.

I got to do something for sure! My babies get fed 2xs a day but this is the 1st time I've ever had this!
I'm doing my W.C. today since the next few days will be packed busy. Do I need to clean the new filter stuff? Or just skip this week?

These issues only started AFTER I changed my filters......

bright lights + warm(er) water + nutrients

filter cleaning surely has released nutrients or taken away a buffer

I would make the substrate thinner (take half of it out with a net), because you don't need it anyhow and it does more bad than good.

You don't need to add fertilizer, in case you did this.

You could add something between tank and lights to dim the lights more. For instance a large piece of foam (perhaps cut with scissors) to create some shades. Experiment first with whatever sheet you have and see for yourself. Can make the tank look interesting and lowers light intensity.

Ask yourself, can I lower temperature with a few degrees.

The temp can def be lowered. It's around 75. . I have 2 goldfish.. no other fish in there or anything else, just 2 Fish.... I can't add foam to the lights b/c the lights are built into the lid and it's always getting splattered by water so foam won't work... I've been keeping the lights off all day except for feeding time but not helping at all

Only goldfish. Take out the heater then. Even without heater, the climate of your water will likely be subtropical due to room temperature and light.

You can keep lights on for 14 hrs or so. Its the intensity that matters. The reason why people reduce duration is because it works for some. And it works because the lights are really dimmed when you turn them off (and ambient light remains).

Too bad you can't dim the lights. They should make this mandatory in those all in one tanks. any change of turning the lights off for a longer period and use a simple LED/desktop light to continue to enjoy the tank ( in the evenings)?

The substrate is full of nutrients. The next water change you do. Take half of it out with a net (store it in a bucket) and use the hose to suck up all the waste that appears.

and in addition, perhaps you can apply some heat resistant tape, cut some small pieces and stick it to the lights with some distance between the pieces.

you would not be the first to do this

That exists? lol never heard of it before... even with my lights only on for a total of maybe 5 hours a day the water is still extremely cloudy.... making me kind of want to back to the filters I use to use....

Yep 2 days. Remember 50+ days of cycling? lol......Do another water change if it bugs you. Keep the light off. Do what ruud says. It will go away, maybe not overnight. :)
