Set up a tank for zebra danio fry?

Hello,

So the 1 Zebra danio fry Iv found has turned into 30+ so I'm thinking my breeder net just isn't going to work.

So, Iv been searching out how to set up a fry tank. So I'm wondering if like a 10 gallon kit from walmart will work? But then I'm reading that you should use sponge filters, I don't know anything about that...and maybe the filter would eat the fry?

What do you guys think is best?

Do you think a 10 gallon would be ok? I won't be keeping them all ( I might want to keep 1 or 2 for my 20 gallon though...but the rest I won't be able to and no one would be living there long term/for ever. )

Do you guys have any money wise cheap ways or tips to set up a fry tank?

One parent said just put them back in the main tank and let them eat them...Then I don't have to buy food for my fish and I don't have to take care of fry.... I can't do that though....:-[...even though I know they have already eaten a ton....IDK...Any advice?

Cheapest way (and I've used this method myself) is to buy one of those Rubbermaid containers, for your purposes a 10 gallon or so would work, but I find it very handy to have around a bigger 30 gallon. Wash it well (without soap!) and fill with treated water. Add an airpump and lots of floating plants and/or moss. Toss in fry and feed 2 or 3 times daily.

Cost:
(assuming you have some moss and an airpump laying around) 10 bucks maximum.
(assuming you are buying everything) 20-30 bucks.
buying a ten gallon aquarium set up at walmart (at least my walmart) 45$

My walmart is cheaper than yours but that's still cheaper! Even though Id have to buy everything. Do you just use a little air stone with the pump (I don't have one) or do you by a filter or something?

Thanks this sounds perfect esp for my & familys budget!!!

I just used an airstone with a pump. It doesn't have to be a really strong pump, in fact its better if its not so that the fry don't get tossed around. Just a little cheapo one will do.

Ok so I would need

List
--------
air pump & accessories
filter & accessories
rubbermaid container
floating plants/moss

I have a whisper (I think its 20-40) old that I got with my used tank....I think it might still work (don't know for sure), would think work or would it be to strong? How could I make it work? The fry are MEGA tiny.

Wait, won't I need a heater too?

(I hear the price climbing lol)

Id be doing daily water changes too right?

A sponge filter is pretty cheap. You can add it onto your pump. Trouble is of course it won't be cycled. But at least it gives you some filtration. You can then kee the sponge filter in another tank in case you need to set up a quarantine tank or a fry tank again. I'm guessing it is warm where you are atm. Otherwise you will have to think about heat. Fortunately danio cope at lower temps. The fry I accidentally rasied in the grey water container outside where out there during a heatwave in Sydney where I was seriously thinking about cooling my tanks inside.

Thanks, its pretty warm here but the house is much cooler (air con) and I'm not sure what temp it would be at...

List
--------
air pump & accessories
filter & accessories
rubbermaid container or tank
floating plants/moss
possibly Heater

and what about light? The only place I have to put it is in my room and my rooms tiny I could but it under the my other tank because its a double stand but would light be an issue or would it be ok?

thanks

Temperature is not a problem, if you're comfortable, they will be too. I prefer smaller containers as it's easier for the fry to find their food, and the small size makes them easier to clean.

Use air to power a small, (cheap), sponge filter... that's all you will need for filtration.

Be sure to do 50% plus water changes daily because they need clean water to grow properly, and your new container won't be cycled. A short length of rigid tubing attached to some air tubing makes a very nice vacuum for cleaning the bottom of the container.

Light is also not an issue. Most fish prefer diffused lighting anyway... tanks lights are for the observers!

Just remember to have fun. It's a learning experience and lots can go wrong, but in the end it's very rewarding to raise your own fish.

Thanks, on light I wasn't sure if I had plants in there if they would need sufficient light. Thanks for all the info, hopefully I will be able to get something worked out soon.
