About two weeks ago I bought 3 Serpae Tetras, then one week ago I bought 4 Longfin Serpaes (the pet store only had longfins). Ever since I bought them, they're all just always hiding in the back of the tank, sitting at the bottom. They don't swim around, they won't eat, I can't get them to come out unless I scare them out, and when I do that they dart around the tank scared to death, before going back and hiding. They don't even all stay together, they just spread out and sit at the bottom of the tank hiding. The tank is a 30gal freshwater planted tank, and it contains 5 nerite snails, 1 amano shrimp, and the Serpaes. Today I noticed one of the Serpaes was dead up against the filter intake tube, it looked like he'd been there for a day or so. I immediately removed him and tested the water. These are the test results: (tested just now)
pH: 7.2
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 5.0 ppm
These are all safe and acceptable water levels, so why did the Serpae die? And more importantly, why are the other 6 Tetras always hiding and never eating? I'm worried the one that died died of starvation, because I can't get any of them to eat. I drop food in and it floats right past them, and they ignore it. I've tried lots of different kinds. If anyone has any advice on the subject, please help!! I'm very worried about my Serpaes.
