Just wondering who all has used it, and any opinions and thoughts on it. My dogs are outside dogs, and have fleas some kind of horrible, and if I can get a rental and get them away from my mom, I'd like to NOT bring fleas into my house, seeing they will be inside dogs then...

Good morning Akari,

For my dogs Kyoko and Zimmerman, I use Advantix. I've been using this treatment for several years and not once have I ever found a flea on me. My dogs are inside/outside dogs.

I gave up on flea collars.

Ken

Too, something else to consider is, look for a rental with no carpet. I do not have any carpet or area rugs in my home.

+1 Ken!!!!! Akari...I have 12 dogs and 3 persian cats....because of living in the south as u know....I have to treat year-round....my little dogs love to be outside during the day.....we have NO FLEAS...(if we were to have a flea problem...lol...it would be a dissaster)...I use the same stuff as Ken or Advantage and mostly because I buy the size for the largest dog and the containers are easy to get at with a suringe(I have it broken down into doses for everyone...a hint for anyone....I even use it on my cats) this is a very cheap way for me to treat all of my pets.

No offense to anyone or products...but most of the stuff from Hartz or Sergants just doesn't work and if they do its not for very long. Much better to spend a few extra dollars in the beginning.

this may help toooo....if the dogs are really infested...before using any of the flea meds...give them a bath in blue Dawn dishliquid(it kills fleas immediatly)...then possiblly treat the dog area, then treat the dogs.....I really think this would give u the jump on them

Sargent's is a cheapo brand, you're not going to get very good results.

If the fleas are that bad, I'm sure you realize that it poses real health concerns for the dogs.

My 3 dogs get Frontline Plus and I don't have a flea/tick issue at all. This time of year, I only dose them every other month, not every month as I do in the hotter seasons.

I plan on using some kind of monthly flea and tick meds, definitely, as well as their medicated shampoo. Just wondering if maybe this spray, since its for carpets and soft surfaces, would help some.

I was also thinking the same thing about carpet, yesterday. I don't think the doggies'll be allowed in very many rooms with carpet, besides maybe my bedroom. My Aussi/Rott mix sheds like HECK, and his fur thick, so it sticks to everything >.< My Lab/retrievers not so bad in that department lol

Wow, Lori, where do you SLEEP? LOL I see you sleeping on the floor, and your bed and couch are taken over by fury bodies XD

I've heard the same about Sergeants, etc, that's why I was asking. I've also heard the same about Dawn! Forgot until just now. I was also planning on a Flea and Tick Dip bath, right before I put them both in the car to take them where ever I move.

I do, sure, but my mom doesn't seem to care too much. She literally takes food out to them once a day, and yells at her Lab for standing in the back yard "barking like and idiot," and that's it >.< Granted, moms tried letting her Lab in, and letting her hang out with her, but she still just sits there and barks, when no ones in the room... I think she thinks because she's going deff, everyone else should, too -_-

Anyway, she won't even give them baths. My step-dad, who doesn't even live there any more, has to give them baths, when ever he manages to come over... Theres no reasoning with her, I've tried... "You have to play with them, you have to bathe them, you have to spend time with them..." *sigh* Soon, I'll have my dogs, and then perhaps she'll let her Lab in the house...

Why don't YOU do that for the dogs then.....

Advantage/Advantix is really the best option. I've tried the stuff from regular pet stores. Doesn't work! You won't need to subject your dogs to all that other harsh chemical stuff if you use Advantage.

Ummm... Because I live 10 hours away...?

When I'm home, I spend most of my time with them, taking them out, to the pet store, to the park, playing with them in the yard...

Since everyone loves this stuff, how much is it for a pack for one normal sized dog, and one gianormous one (65 and 130 pounds), how many applications come in each pack?

Check on there for good prices. You need a vet's prescription for most of the good stuff, unless you're getting it directly from the vet, but it's more expensive from them. Don't buy this stuff on ebay, as it's not the real deal. I learned the hard way.

I think our vet caries Frontline and stuff... I'll have to look around at what available when I'm home for spring break in a few weeks.

In that link, what's the difference between Advantix II and Advantage?

And are chewable flea and tick controls better, or no?

Has anyone ever heard of using fresh garlic as a preventative? I know garlics not too good for dogs, but in smaller amounts its supposed to be like giving to our fish, boosting the immune system and keeping away pesky bugs...

From ASPCA:

Dogs are sensitive to garlic. Unfortunately, we do not know specifically what dosage causes problems, and it is not yet completely known what breeds and age groups are most sensitive to this toxicity. What we do know is that gastrointestinal problems and red blood cell damage can occur as a result of feeding garlic to pets. An occasional small amount, such as that in most commercial pet foods and treats, may not cause a problem, but because of the risk, we generally recommend that you avoid feeding your pets products that contain more concentrated amounts of garlic.

Gotcha. No garlic lol

Are than any natural preventatives that I could add to, like, their food or water, that would reduce the need for chemical preventatives? Tends to cheaper....

I also plan in switching them to Wellness dog food, instead of the poop they are on right now (Publix brand). The higher quality food will help with that, as well.

Wellness is a good brand.

As with anything that's high quality, you can expect to have a higher price with any treatments for the dogs. You can try mixing Brewer's Yeast in with their food as a supplement. This has been known to help with fleas. But, if you're not there, would your mother bother with it?

The only thing I can do until the dogs are under my supervision, is bug the crud out of her when I go home in a couple weeks, and keep at it as best I can.

I plan on getting a rental come summer, after this semester of college. That's when all this will be happening. I tried switching them to Wellness over winter break, but mom doesn't understand the fact that she feeds them faaaar too much, and you just can't do that with a $30 bag of food. If she fed them how they were supposed to be fed on Wellnes, it've turned out to be cheaper on their 15 pound bag of food, than on the 44 pound bag of Publix brand, even when feeding three mouths...

Is there a difference between, say, the jar or yeast you buy in the baking isle at the grocery store, and brewers yeast?

It's actually labeled "Brewer's Yeast". I'm unsure of what makes it different from any other yeast, if anything.

I'll have to find somewhere that sells both (or find both at different stores, and take pictures of the packages) and compare them... How much would I use?

Also, any answer about the different types of flea and tick meds?

You'll have to research on-line for dosage using the yeast based on the weight of the dog.

Good afternoon,

I purchase Advantix from the groomer who is much cheaper than the vet. Advantix kills ticks fleas, flies, lice and mosquitoes, where Advantage doesn't have the same claim.

Advantage kills fleas and lice.

I pay $16 per tube which is good for 1 month and for 1 dog. I could probably get it cheaper ordering it on line, but I'm good for now. I like visiting the groomers

Ken, my dogs HATE the groomer LOL Plus, why pay for a bath and clip, when we can do that ourselves >.< We have to drag in, and then they drag us out when its time to leave XD

Now that I think about it, Pet Supermarket near where my friend and I want to look at rentals caries Advantix, I think... They at least cary Frontline. Are these comparable? I'll have to check it out when I go home. I'm planning a trip to that area, to a state park me and dogs like to go to, so after a nice long walk, we can stop by and take a peek.

Mosquitoes aren't too big of a deal. I'll have a pond, with some small fish for mosquito control. Not that that'll keep them away completely.

Also, I found this site, going back to the yeast thing for a sec...

HI Akari,

I actually took my cat Gabby to the groomers/spa (lol) every 6 months to be clipped. Even though I no longer have Gabby (photos in my profile albums), I still get my flea control for the dogs from them.

My dogs can swim in the creek.

I have a nice list of pet stores and other places I have to visit now lol The dogs'll like that! Unless it involves a groomers or vets office XD

Google Food Grade DIATOMACEOUS EARTH for fleas and ticks. Good for humans and pets.

I tried adding Brewer's Yeast to the dog food and even sprinkling Diatomaceous Earth over their fur and on my carpets as well as their dog beds. It does help, but it will not affect an infestation quick enough to bring it under control.

Our rescue dog (amazing we've had her 2 years already!!) brought fleas with her. And, we've been fighting fleas ever since!! Now the dogs are treated with Frontline Plus monthly; Brewer's Yeast a couple of times a week; and diatomaceus earth sprinkled over the carpets weekly.

I have never seen any fleas in the house or on a human with these steps.

I can tell you from personal experience that it is going to be an uphill battle gaining control over the fleas!! But, it can be done with persistence.

When I lived on the coast, my dogs got fleas pretty bad. Advantage wiped them out and I didn't have to do anything else. If your flea infestation is super bad on your dogs, I'd think you'd want to do something about it like now. It's really bad for them.

You don't have to tell me that.... My mom actually just realized yesterday how bad it was. I was talking to her on the phone while I drove home from work and she said she gave Licorice (her 14 year old Lab) a bath, and a whole *bunch* of fleas came off her. Granted, Licorice thinks rolling in the dirt is the best past-time ever, so she's got the worst fleas out of the three dogs. Mom said she bathed her for an hour or so, got all the fleas off, and then went to WalMart, bought the best flea stuff they had ($20 for a single dose! ), and hasn't seen a flea on her since. 'Bout time... She said she's going to clean up the yard, and give the other two baths. I told her about using Brewers Yeast, so we'll see how that goes...

I'll definitely look into Advantage and Advantix

I don't get enough to need a snow blower. Just the slippery roads and ice. But good thing is that most of the snow usually is gone by the end of the day. It rarely sticks around.

So, for me, I enjoy the snow. It isn't around long. Just hate having to drive in it. All the crazies on the road thinking they don't need to slow down.

During skI season we get a lot of tourists, they scare me. Far too many people can't drive in the snow!
