Separating guppy fry

Hi I currently have guppy fry in a trap in small tank with the mum. Fry are about five days old. I’d like to let them swim freely in the tank and don’t want to be buying multiple tanks so my question is - can I move the mother fish to a 2.5 liter unfiltered glass container until the fry can be sexed? Then I plan to leave females in tank with the mum and move males to my other tank with other male guppies (when they’re all big enough not to be eaten). I was planning on getting air stone for the mum’s temporary home but no filter. Sorry for the ramble I’m very new to this and want to do the right thing by my fish. Would appreciate some advice. Thanks!

 

I would not, 2.5 liters is just to small, not to mention that there isn't a filter. Why do you want to separate the female?

 

It can take several months for guppies to be old enough to sex, based on your temperature and feeding schedule. That's a VERY long time for a single female guppy to hang out in a half-gallon jar by herself. Also, female guppies can have serial pregnancies from a single interaction with a male, so in the time you're growing them out, you're likely to get another brood or two.

Fry are excellent hiders, especially given any plant cover. Also, well fed guppies are much less likely to eat their young than hungry ones.

Thanks for advice. So much to learn! I’d ideally like to have fry and mum in same tank but I believed they needed to be separated until big enough.

A few weaker ones might get eaten, but if you provide hiding spaces(live plants such as java moss guppy grass frogbit mostly) most will survive. In fact, you might one day wish that they DID get eaten lol, guppies reproduce at a startling fast rate so even if most will get eaten the population will quickly catch up.

Java moss and similar plants almost impossible to get here so have ordered on line and waiting to receive. Have also ordered cardamine lyrata (thinks that’s the name) because it’s so attractive.

Let them swim freely? I mean they don't need assistance lol. If you mean just leave them in there with the mother its fine since you have floating plants(if you want higher survival rates I would have more than just a few tho).

I agree with bgntoc u should take the fry out in an other 4 weeks let them get bigger first
