Hello,

If you have sufficient surface water movement then air pumps are not necessary, however, I would suggest you have one on hand for emergency purposes along with a battery powered air pump for those times when the power may go out.

If you have any surface water movement then chances are really good that there is enough oxygen being put into the water for your fish. If you ever see the fish gasping at the surface for air, then you know the surface water movement is not sufficient and an air pump should be added.

Normally, with good filtration breaking the water surface, this is enough.

Bichirs can breath air. That is probably why it is going to the surface.

What size tank, and what kind of filter do you have?

That bichir needs a way bigger tank.. They get almost as long as your 10 gallon...

Try like a 55 gallon minimum IMO..

If you have a filter to create water agitation then an air pump is completely cosmetic.....

Yeah let's just ignore the fact that a Senegalus Bichir is in a 10 gallon and will inevitably become stunted if not given a bigger home...

It practically gets as long as your tank..
