Second rabbit

Do rabbits really need friends? I have a minI rex that I've had for over a year now. I'm trying to convince my mom to let me get him a buddy (female). But she doesn't want another rabbit in the house. My rabbit hangs out with my dog so he already has a pal. Does he need a companion too? (I would get them both fixed obviously) thanks for reading!

No I don't think all rabbits need to be bonded because I adopted a loner rabbit because it couldn't be bonded. Most rabbits would like a friend

Thank for responding. I'm glad they don't need to be bonded because my mom is not budging on getting a second rabbit. I'm still workin on it!

If you can its so so so worth it!!! I thought the same about my single bunny and I really wanted another one, but my parents kept saying no. However finally they came around and I got another one this year and it's crazy how much she's changes!! So much happier, friendlier and it's much easier to look after two than it is to look after one crazily enough much better as well because you need to be spending ALOT of time with your lone rabbit as they're extremely social and need attention, however the time you have to spend with them decreases big time with another one as they keep eachother entertained obviously love spending time with them but sometimes you don't have the time to be there 24/7 you know sorry for the later reply, just found out that the forum has a section for other pets!!

Thanks for responding too! That's what ive been reading. I'm really wanting to bond my rabbit with another but my mom isn't budging still. I've got a question. When bonding rabbits does breed matter? Like can I bond my minI rex with a Holland lop?

no breed doesn't matter at all You could definitely do that!! Yeah, the only way I was aloud another rabbit was because I'm the one who pays for everything to do with them so they finally gave up and let me get another one hahaha. So cute. Although breed doesn't matter, gender usually does! You said yours is a boy aye? So you would want to get a desexed female, and 100% get your boy desexed long before getting another one. They can not be around a female who hasn't been desexed for around 6-8 weeks after surgery as he can still get her pregnant.

On another note, what's his name? So cute

Yes mine is a boy. His name is popper. He's already a little over a year old. It is to late to get him desexed? Anyway my parents seem to be accepting the idea of a second rabbit more now. Their only concern now is more poop and I can't blame them there.

No, he's still really young so that's fine!!! Quite expensive but definitely worth it! I recommend getting a girl from a rescue as they usually have them desexed and vaccinated already. That's good that they're warming up, so cool having two!

These are my two grey one is a girl who's name is Chilli, but I just call her bunny hahaha. She was supposed to be a minI lol but I think she's a mix because her ears never went down, so she usually has one up one down And the other one is Andy, I got him in feb this year to be her friend. He was found stray and kept going to the same house everyday, so they were feeding him but found it too expensive so they gave him to our local rabbit rescue and I got him. He's so so so friendly, which I found surprising seeing as he was stray. No Ida what breed he is, think he's a huge mix of wild rabbits and something domestic

Not sure if you have guyfawkes where you live, if you don't it's a night where everyone lets off fireworks which sucks for the pets, so this is a photo of them inside for the night

So adorable!!!! We have thunder over Louisville which is a huge deal around here. We live right down the street from the river where they set fireworks off of barges and it bothers our animals every year. Popper didn't handle it too well last year. He sat in his cage snuggled up with some hay and a pillow case and stomped all night long. You mentioned desexing is pretty expensive. How much is it typically?

I had them for years, a bonded pair is wonderful. However, it can take a while until they get along.o
I get all my animals from rescue, for example a fixed rabbit from our Humane Society is $10. No idea how much a vet charges but in my area rabbits are considered exotics, so everything is more expensive.

Yeah it's so sad with the fire works and thunder etc I work at a vet clinic which has a rabbit specialist so I got it really cheap as a discount, but usually $200-$300 for a girl and $150-$180 for a boy (in New Zealand dollars). You absolutely need to find a rabbit specialist as normal vets aren't as knowledgable on rabbits. However, like Piaelliott said, it's much, much cheaper to get a rabbit from a rescue.

My girl from the pet shop cost me $80, and then $60-$70 for the vaccination and check up (which is an annual cost and doubles with a second), and then should have been $280 for desexing (whereas I got it for $30 which doesn't ever happen unfortunately but I was lucky due to work and the boss of the vet clinics being my friends dad). So as you can see that was a lot of money!! However, with Andy, I paid $60 for him, and he was already desexed and vaccinated

Also make sure you do your research big time on bonding rabbits. That's really, really important as it is extremely different for everyone!! I was lucky and the lady at the rescue introduced my two and they got along straight away with no fighting, or humping or anything which was lucky, but that doesn't always happen!! Sometimes it takes a week, several weeks, or can take months (which is rare but can happen). So you have to make sure you have somewhere for the second rabbit to go during the bonding process!

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll be doing research and trying to find a rabbit specialist to desex popper. Hopefully here soon I can get him bonded with another rabbit.
