have got my eye on ebay listing for a fluval 307 Filter, supposedly 3 weeks old, it will be going into a brand new aquarium this will be my only tank.

In terms of media and setting it up is there anything I should/shouldn't be doing when setting this up. or stay away from second hand filters all together.

PS. The listing has 2 hours left so any advice would be great

Second-hand filters are fine. When setting up check for leaks and notify the seller if it was listed as leak free and it has a leak, clean it out with hot water and replace all old media and you should be good to go

Thanks for the information now to win the bidding war

I'll preface this by saying I despise canister filters in general, so my opinion is certainly biased, but I would definitely not buy a canister second hand. How do you know the previous owner properly maintained the gaskets? This is a machine which pumps water out of your tank and over your floor. It's not worth the risk in my opinion, especially when other options are so much cheaper.

If you can get it for under $100 w/ free shipping, then maybe consider it.

I've seen the 307 on sale a couple of times at PetSmart for $147.

If you download their app and play the in-app game, you can earn 20% off coupons for in-store purchases.

It brings the 307's price down to $117.
