Seachem Prime is a LIFESAVER! All people sceptical about prime, read this.

Prime works! I tested my water and it was purple (5ppm) with nitrites. First of all I did a water change, but then decided to test prime. I put 3 drops of SeaChem Prime in the test vial and it instantly turned blue (0 nitrites). Lifesaver! This stuff actually works! Good job seachem! Go prime!

Good to know this stuff works haha. The only thing I'm curious about is that in emergencies Prime states to go double the dose or even up to 4x. I know more doesn't hurt the tank, but how does that work? Removes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for up to 24 hours 4x the amount? (I know Prime doesn't REMOVE it, just detoxifies it for a certain number of time)

Seachem Prime doesn’t eliminate ammonia or nitrites. Instead, it makes both ammonia and nitrites non-toxic to fish, but only up to a combined level of 1 ppm.

The only way to keep the combined level of both below 1 ppm is with consistent water changes.

I'm srry if I'm wrong but now its just getting confusing. Seachem says it detoxifies stuff and you can still read it in the test tube, but then according to the API test SOMETIMES you can read it, and according to some scientists it isn't possible? Someone help lol.
I do think water changes are the way to go though, prime aids you but it isn't really a substitute.

It doesn't cure the water of ammonia and etc. It just converts it to a less toxic form for your fish, which can help in situations where you have an ammonia spike. I just use it is a water conditioner after I do a water change, or when my ammonia readings are pretty high. Makes me feel a little bit more safe after I do a water change.

I am not sure that test tells us any thing. The test vial is 5 ml. Three drops is the dosage of Prime for a gallon and a half. 1.5 gallons is about five and a half thousand ml. So three drops in a vial is about a thousand times the suggested dosage.

Yes, but from my understanding that would mean you can still read it then? I've seen two differing opinions:
1. When you add prime, you can still read "stuff", its just in its non-toxic form.
2. It gets rid of it all together.
That makes everything confusing and, imo, if the ammonia tests I've seen were accurate then thats just more puzzling. Some still got readings of ammonia after adding prime while others got rid of it. That doesn't really add up, unless its the amount of prime you dose(which would make sense I guess..).
Edit: I'm still going to use prime and suggest it, I've had really good success using it and others have too. However, I admit I am not going to say prime 100% detoxifies things because I have never actually seen any scientific evidence to prove that prime actually does what it claims to do.
Edit again: Yes I know that prime "detoxifies and does not eliminate", I am merely stating others opinions about it if that makes sense.

Prime does NOT eliminate ammonia or nitrites, no matter what the test shows or doesn’t show. It only detoxifies both, but only up to a combined level of 1 ppm.

Correct, except most say it’s effective for up to 48 hours. So I’m confused with what you were saying in your original post?

Sorry. I was probably confused

Alright everyone. I didn't mean for everyone to start getting controversial. Just wanted to share my experience. If you don't want to use it or don't find it useful that's up to you

No need to apologize!

What’s most important is this. . . Prime is very good. But it doesn’t change the need to do consistent water changes.

I didn’t realize we were “getting controversial”? Just having a discussion to make sure we all understand.

It’s very good stuff, so long as you understand what it does and what it doesn’t do.

No cure for old, but we can work on stupid.

I ride motorcycles and participate in a motorcycle forum. One of the guys on that forum call himself “AlwaysLearning”.

I hope I learn something on the day I die.

For whatever it’s worth. An acronym for an old person’s phrase.

At the moment I have a 2013 Versys 650, 2014 Honda CB500X and 2012 KLX 250S. I recently sold a 1992 HD Heritage softail and a 2005 DRZ 400S.

Miss my softail. That was my favorite of all.

Nice. And nice selection.

I have a 2010 CVO Ultra Classic. And the urge to replace the dirt bike (Yamaha YZ 125) I had growing up.

I like to do barrels and pole bending with him. We both like to go fast, but unless he's reeeeeeeeeally motivated, spunky, or spooked, his fastest is a nice smooth canter. So we don't win anything, but it's fun

The KLX 250S is a great around town bike. Highway capable for short distances. Light (295 lbs). I have a rack with the ability to put a top case on it so I can run errands.

Planning to sell the Versys. It is a rocket. At least in my world. Have accidentally wheelies it twice by getting a little to frisky off the line. And it carries its weight high. Weighs 200 lbs less than my old softail but feels heavier at slow speeds because it is top heavy. Handles really well at speed. And is capable of long distances. But does not really fit my needs.

I like the new softails. I think the new suspension is a massive improvement over the old softails. I think they are really more like the old Dynos but softail is a better name.

Anyway, ifI were to get a new bike now, I think it would be a new. Or newish softail with the new suspension.

We were down in Hollywood Beach FL this spring and loved all the fancy cars. Ferrari, Mozaroti, etc.

They’re definitely nice bikes. I bought mine new in 2010.

I had “retired” from riding for about 18 years or so, and my wife (who never rode before) actually talked me into buying another one. I always liked “the thing” with Harleys, but I’m cheap and convinced myself they’re not worth the price. So I bought a Suzuki LC1500.

We had the Suzuki for a couple years and this caught our eyes. I still can’t believe the price I paid, but I’m glad I did!
