Schooling Glofish

With my 10 gallon setup I am limited to the number and type of fish I can have. That's okay, as long as the fish are colorful and interesting to look at. I'm thinking of glofish danios, because they come in so many different colors even though they're all the same species. Do the fish care if they are different colors? Let's say I got two of each color - will the blue only school with the blue, the red with the red, etc?

With glofish it seems a shame to limit to all one color, but I want my schooling fish to be happy.

Unfortunately glofish of any type must be kept in a 20 gallon.

There are colorful schooling fish that can be kept in a 10, but they are few. I know one such example is ember tetras.

Zebra danios are not really schooling fish but instead shoaling fish but since an aquarium does not have any predators (hopefully), the danios will not stay together even if they are the same colour but might shoal if something scares them.

Not sure on your experience, but Badis are great fish for a little species only aquarium. Small but beautiful and fun to watch. Does require a bit of read up on their requirements but they are not particularly difficult from my experience.

Funny, the official glofish website says you can easily stock TWO per gallon in a 10 gallon. Why so much misinformation? I guess they're trying to sell you lots of fish....

Ever seen the official glofish kits? Very expensive and too small for the fish. I like that the proceeds go towards medical research but there is no real regard for the fish's well-being.

You hit the nail on the head! They sell a fish called the iridescent shark (a catfish) that you can find in most pet stores at around 2-4" long yet these grow in excess of 4'....

I just checked the 10 gallon stocking Sticky and it lists all danios as "up to 12". Why would glofish danios have different parameters?

They are essentially zebra danios, and they are very active fish who need plenty of room to swim. I feel a 10 gallon is too small for such an active fish.

.
These look like regular old danios to me. Just in neon bright colors.

Some people say a 10 is fine, others recommend a 20 or larger. Personally, I feel a 20 is better considering how active the fish are.

Some of the stocking suggestions on the site are a bit outdated.

they are zebra danios, just have the special genes that make them the Glofish. There is no other difference.

Never heard of them but that is a pretty little fish! But what I just read about them online says minimum 20 gallon?

I don't really care if the fish school/shoal but from what I've read it seemed to be saying that they prefer to be in schools. I just assumed they'd want to stay together.
Personally I'd rather see them swimming free all over the tank.

WELCOME to Fishlore!!!

There are 3 types of glofish: tiger barbs, zebra danios, and skirt tetras. Sadly none of these fish are suitable for a 10 gallon or 5 gallon. Because the company created these kits people think these fish are able to live in these small tanks.

Stocking List for 10 Gallons
There are no zebra danios listed on the list , I think your looking at other species of danios- I believe your mistaking them for glowlight danios

I should specify: Scarlet Gem Badis (smaller than the regular Badis)

They don't care about the different colors in their school. The glofish tetras are modified black skirt/white skirt tetras, so you can add those also in the school. With the glo-fish danios they also don't care about different colors. I am not sure if you can use the natural zebra danios to add to the school, but it make sense since they are virtually the same species.

The danios and tetras can both get nippy and aggressive if they aren't in a group. It is recommended to have at least 6. I have 5 in my 10 gallon tank and it is overstocked. I am doing 30% water changes twice weekly to keep the water parameters within normal limits. I have a 30 gallon that I am getting ready to set up, just to get enough room, and will be adding more to the school then.

Good luck!

I wish the stocking list had the common name as well as the taxonomic name. All those Latin names start to look alike after a while.

I think I did see Celestial pearl danios on that list?

Yes! Theyre on the list! I know aquaticarts sells them. I bought my shrimp, mystery snails, and hornwart through them. Theyre great!

They do have the common name , for most of the names it is "common name(scientific name)-max #"

I suggest one thing to help search faster is press "ctrl-f"
