Scarlet Badis photos

Just thought I would show some terrible photos of my scarlet badis pair. The female is hiding in the back of the tank and nearly invisible (she's small and therefore not very colorful yet - possibly very young still). The male is a bit pale, but more adventurous than I thought he would be.

Their tank isn't ready yet. It was infested with camallanus worms and needs to be emptied and bleached out, and I haven't had time, so I tossed them into a 2.5 gallon critter keeper with a bit of hornwort to let them get used to my dogs, some activity, etc. I'll be fixing up their tank very soon I hope. It's going to be a heavily planted indian river biotope. Since my pea puffers didn't work out, I will be looking into tiny, tiny schooling fish as dither fish that could reasonably be found in the same area as scarlet badis to add to the tank (if anyone knows of any, I'm open to suggestion).

Anyway here you go, some terrible shots of what hopefully will soon be a very beautiful, colorful fish.

I like those..Never tried to keep them, but thinking about trying. Look into Everglades spotted perch(sunfish) or something small and calm like dario dario?

Well fish from the everglades are not native to India, so that wouldn't work

Looks like it's coming down to going slightly untrue to the biotope. The good news is that means I likely get to keep danio erithromicron finally. They've been on my list for a while.

Might also consider P. gelius. Dwarf Indian Gold barb. They are very pretty but a bit larger than I was hoping for. There really should be more Indian nanofish. Of course I could always get a pair of dario hysignon and skip the dither fish... they are also gorgeous.

Hara JerdonI trio is a possibility, though less desirable as they tend to inhabit the same areas as the dario dario. Unfortunately they are also a bit large for dither fish.

Sure does sound like you have more than a basic direction. May I ask where you got your Scarlet badis from?

From a friend, actually, not sure exactly where she managed to get the female. The male came from the wholesaler who supplies the store where she works.

Females are extremely uncommon in the US, usually only available from a few select breeders. Occasionally one will pop up in an import order but it's generally not on purpose, as the females exhibit little coloration and do not generally make good ornamental fish. I did however come across a photo of a female dario dario who was solid white with ornate metallic flecks on her fins, with almost no banding. She's definitely a badis - though I think she may have been misidentified as a dario dario when in reality she is dario hysginon. She was pretty, anyway.

junebug awesome that you picked up a pair, as I am picking a pair up myself this Saturday from MsJinkzd at Catcon. I have been looking at these beauties for months trying to figure out where I can fit them in my setups, decided to go for it with the gobies I was getting from her. Going to add them to the Harlequin Rasbora tank when they get out of QT, but am thinking of picking up a school of mosquito rasbora to go with them in a new tank. Another option I have been kicking over is a school of Boraras urophthalmoides, to do a 40 or 55 gallon tank of tiny fish. I can't help you on the Indian fish to go with it, if I had more time(lots going on right now with the kids) I would just to see the results. I am weirdly hyped about you getting Dario Dario for some reason....Must leave before I post a book...

Captian Jim As I stated Msjinkzd.com has them currently in stock, will pm you later if she has females.

I'd love some if it didn't look like my fish-keeping days were numbered. Sigh. I will live vicariously through pics of your fish

Thanks guys! It looks like for now they will be species only, since I really want to breed them, and the only fish that fit into the biotope would eat their fry .

I might look at gobies. Surely there are some gobies from Assam, yes? Lol.
Sarcasm Included it's great that you're getting dario dario from her. Rachael, is that her name? Anyway she has a great reputation so I'm sure you'll be happy with the fish

All the fish I got from Rachel were showing nice colors. She threw in an extra male and another nerite.
Here are a couple picts of them after I got them in QT.

Sorry I couldn't get better shots, but my QT is on the floor, as all extra tables have been confiscated for my daughter's party next weekend.

That is a female Stiphodon percnopterygionus, that I also got from Rachel. The male is in the foreground but it doesn't show how colorful he is.
