ok so in the next few days I will be buying either a 10 gallon or 20 gallon aquarium tank kit and since I'm rather new to the hobby I'm wondering should I use gravel for the bottom of my tank or sand for the bottom and why I'm planing to use plastic plants for the sake of budget concerns

edit what are the pros and cons of both sand and gravel also do I have to clean sand like I do gravel or with sand can I just do water changes I'm open to any ideas you may have

I don't really think there's to many pros to gravel besides that you can't suck it up as easy. There's more work involved with gravel, like gravel vacing. It can also prevent you from some types of fish since it can damage barbles.
Sand is far easier to take care of, just hover the vac above the sand to get debris, it also allows for more variety in fish.

Not only is the sand easier to take care of but it opens up more fish choices.

The same goes for a 20 gal over a ten gal, being a more stable tank and allowing for more choices in fish stocking.

Can I have corydoras with gravel substrate? I have small natural gravel no too many rough edges

As long as it is soft and rounded and of a smaller grain you are usually alright, but there will still be the possibility of it damaging their barbels so sand is always suggested
