Just trying to work out how much sand I will need for tank. How deep would you recommend for a planted tank?

@BeanFish told me 3cm-4cm deep for my 55gallon...

5 cm is good, but you could probably do less. Make sure the tank is aerated. My first tank I had sand and got black fungusy stuff all over it. It went away the day after I put a bubble wall under the sand.

I've always had sand but being a landscaper have always used my supplies and so cost not being an issue always had a deep substrate.
The new tank build I'm going to use specialty black sand and the tank being 6ft x 2.5ft means that it could get expensive
