Sand and rocks

  1. thatreefguy22 Member Member

Can I use sand that I originally used for a saltwater tank, for my fresh water project?

I would like to, and just add a few assorted bags of rocks/pebbles with large pieces of drift wood.

    Thanks!!

I don't know much about saltwater stuff. But I'm guessing you might be able to use your used saltwater sand in a freshwater aquarium. But if the the sand is "aragonite sand" it will raise your ph.

If you have the time, what I would do is to put the sand in a bucket, add water, check the pH, and then let it sit a few days and check again. If the pH hasn't changed, you're good to go.

It is aragonite...what if I rinse it a few times?

Yes rinsing would be good. As anon said, you should add the sand into a bucket with water and leave it there for a few days. Test the Ph and if it hasn't changed then you're good

I'm adding a sump filter tank to this freshwater 55g :) and the ph stays around 8.2 with this sand.

Sure! But I just got my glass cut for my 10 gallon sump baffle dividers...but now I'm stumped on the placements.
I posted a question in the filter section of these forums asking if it would be okay for some filter pads (not all) to be submerged.

I'll take some photos tonight if the girlfriend lets me work with it lol.

That's great! I've always wanted to know how to build my own sump myself. I have and extra 10 gallon sump that I would like to use on my 60 gallon tank. Is it possible you can post some pics of your work so I can get an idea? Thanks

    Yeah, not a problem!
I'll show you everything I'm using.

I'm gonna mess around with baffle placements tonight and see how I can get good mechanical filtration, and bio filtration.
After, I'll be plumbing a second pump that will feed my refugium.

Probably get the baffles in tomorrow morning. But it's gonna be fun, it's my first shot at a DIY project

Nice. What size cut did you use for the glass?

Well, a typical 10 gal tank is about 10" wide, so the glass baffles I have I got cut 9 5/8".

The height you want them depends on you :) just don't exaggerate lol

Hey, I have been working on some filter/sump things today.
I went out and got a sheet of egg crate acrylic.
And now, I've started the drain plumbing to my sump.
I have yet to set up my sump baffles, and then let it cure for 2 days.

Thought I'd keep you posted on the project! Take care

That's great. Are you drilling your tank for the sump?

No, I'm using the same ol' hob overflow I've had for about a year when I started back on aquariums.

Right now, I'm cutting up some egg crate plastic to help me out in deciding how it'll be set with glass, and then use the egg crate as mech filter holders (floss, pads, bio balls/foam. Etc.) :)
