Safely change tank water from bottled spring water to tap to avoid PH swing.

Scenario:

  • 2.5 gallon betta tank with betta in it.
  • Parameters unknown at this time
  • PH testing 7.5-8.0 (strips)
  • Tank recently upgraded to 2.5 gallon from unknown previous size. Tank was filled with spring water.
  • Betta needs to be reconditioned back to tap
  • This betta is already going through a lot including potential ph shock from switching tap to bottled.
  • Tap water values are being tested and will be posted here.
  • It's hard water treated with a water softener salt......
NO3 = 0
N02 = 0
pH = 6-6.5
KH = ~200
GH = 0-30

Can someone address the water softener issue as well please?

What is the safest way to do this to avoid shocking betta? Original thinking was replacing 1/4 cup over 10 days.

Suggestions needed but I ask that we all stick to the matter of safely changing out the water.

Thanks so much for the help.

Replacing the 1/4 cup daily for a while sounds like a good plan to me.

I know you asked to stick to the water migration question. But you said hard water treated with water softener salt. Do you mean through a water softener or in another way?

I also have a water softener and I am now drawing my water from before the water softener. Water softeners replace Calcium and Magnesium with Sodium (usually sometime potassium).

Anyway, before I learned about the impact of the water softener, by guppies did fine. My plants did not do well. My Betta did okay, but I think the Betta is doing better now. That may have had nothing to do with the water. But after reading and getting some comments from this community, I decided that I did not want to use the water softener water.

Thank you so much for your input on both ph and water softener matters! I just hoped to not have flaming on the lack of parameters, tank size, changing water source....

So far so great! Very much appreciate all the help with this matter. I don't find it straightforward at all.
