I would like to add a small piece of branching wood to my tank. I don't want to buy it and I have searched for the safe types to use. The ones I would have access to are Birch, Cherry (Purple Sand Cherry), Apple, and Oak. I could also get Maple but that wasn't on the list of good nor bad.

Which one would be the best to use and how long would I have to soak or boil it? It would be a dead twig from one of the trees.

WTFish?

I have oak in mine, but I think all those are fine. I just scrubbed it real well and then poured boiling water over it a few times, as it was too big to put in a pot. So far so good.

I got a small Oak twig and glued a small birch one to it and weighted them down with a small rock.
