Sad Oscar Cichlid.

SuperD14

I have a new baby (4-5inch) albino Oscar Cichlid in a 280litre(75gallon) tank which is 5ft long x 45cm wide x 45cm high. The temp is currently 26degrees celcius and he only shares the tank with a 4 inch red tailed shark. I heard Oscar cichlids are very interactive however whenever I go up to the tank he swims away and hides behind his driftwood. What can I do to change this?

How long has he been in this tank?

I’ve only had him about 5 days. Will this have anything to do with it?

This is the tank he’s currently in, sorry about the poor lightning it’s hard to capture on camera. Also, the lid is only temporary until I get something sorted out.

Yes IMO they are sulky fish and it takes them a bit to adjust to their new environment. Some will pout even after moving decor or water changes.

More decor would help him right now like a pot in there.

Okay thank you, he doesn’t seem to hide when I’m not up close he is swimming back and forth. Also, I was wondering if they like a high flow as I have a spare wave maker and was wondering if it’s worrh putting it in?

I am not sure about that. Let me tag someone who knows a lot more about them than I do. Dawn Michele

Hello. You need to give him some time to adjust. They sulk whenever you do anything different to the tank. Is he eating OK? Your tank looks bigger than a 75.

Yes he’s fine it’s the only time I can get him to move away from the back of the tank. Some sinking carnivore pellets is what he’s been eating. He seemed to only want to eat when I was sitting on a chair in front of the tank rather than standing. Maybe the large presence frightened him as he’s still young. And it’s 60inches long, 18 inches wide and between 16-18 inches tall, so it’s between 70 and 80 gallons. Thanks

I currently have an albino oscar roughly 4-5 inches, I got him as a baby from the petstore, it took him some time to figure out who I was even today he goes and pouts behind his rock cave. Like the others have said give him abit of time to adjust to who you are, possibly a pot or something he can go and hide will make him feel abit better. They are very moody fish I've noticed, mine will pout if I touch his tank other then putting food into it, they even move some rocks around or the plants so don't take it personally if that happens in your tank, just let them decorate the way they want.

Ah thank you. Will plants be okay In the tank as I definitely want some however I don’t want him to eat all of them or shred them apart and it be a waste of time and money. If so, what plants can withstand him?

All fish are a little different so your might not attack the plants, but most likely will though lol mine was moving the fake ones inside the tank, I'll take a picture of a fake decoration I have with a real plant wrapped around it, not sure what it's called though. The green parts standing up is the real plant, the rest is his bonsaI tree, He doesn't seem to try and nip at the plants on this

Also don't freak out if you see yours laying on the bottom of the tank, Oscar's are known for doing this

Oh wow I like the look of that. That bonsaI also looks quite natural which is nice. What size tank and what stocking do you have?

Ah thank you, I previously had 4 rbp’s in this tank and during water changes or if the tank got too cold they would also lie down.

Thank you, I got it the tree the day I got him so that's his tree. The tank is a 75 gallon, nothing but my oscar so far, I'm hoping my sailfin pleco and him become friends when he gets big enough. I added the airstone and filter because my canister filter wasn't working right, I still need to get a black background

Oh wow! Your tank looks great!!! I need to get a background for my tank, a proper lid and some better light. At the moment it’s doing the job for the fish but it’s not pleasing to the eye for me to look at.

Thank you, I did a water change yesterday. The tank thankfully came with everything but the decorations and filter bubbler inside the tank, once I get the background I'll see about the light, possibly something not so bright.

I think your light looks good as it is. How long have you had your Oscar for him to grow to that size?

I fed him three times daily until a couple weeks ago, I feed him twice daily. I feed him abit and watch him eat, feed him abit watch him eat, keep doing that for two or so min then stop. They always seem hungry and they have that look that's hard to say no. I also fed him a few feeder fish couple weeks ago so possibly that helped

What food are you feeding him as a staple? I’ll throw in some thawed out shrimp or similar, however I don’t think I’ll be trying the feeder fish as there are already 4 (+/- 1inch) convict Cichlid babies in there and he is completely disinterested by them

I'm trying to find some type of pellet that he likes, otherwise I'm currently using tetra cichlid cichlid crisps, cichlid chips sinking type but he isn't a fan of those. I'll add pieces of fish on sale at my local supermarket. I was thinking of making my own, he loves grapes also

This is my Big Boy in his 125. He is a little over 12 inches.

Ahhh grapes that’s quite interesting, do you cut them up st all or?

I peel off the outside of it then chop it to smaller bites I know he can eat. Google oscar fruits and veggies and itll give you a list of stuff to try, apparently sweet potatoes they like but mine didnt, so far that's the only thing he hasn't eating yet lol

I came across this which the person said her Oscar didn’t like grapes, I’ll be sure to try a few but I guess it really is down to each individual oscar

Yeah all fish will be different so if one doesn't like something another might, just give some a try and see

Stoka

I would try live food. Every time my cousin came to my house he would drop a net full of feeders. It got so that when he walked in the room they would go nuts at the front of the tank.

Thanks for the advice, I’ve got axolotls which I feed earthworms so when he warms up a bit I’ll chop up an earthworm maybe in two and try to feed him a bit

I live in the uk where it’s illegal to sell fish as feeders but you can breed your own to feed to your fish, however I don’t think he’s interested as I have 4 0.75-1.25 inch convict cichlids in there that he is completely disinterested in so I’m not sure

Stoka

Try earthworms, crickets etc. if you find something he really likes he will associate you with pleasure and become your best friend.

Little update. He’s been warming up lately and today I went up to the tank and he came straight over to me just below the water line. I got a piece of defrosted shrimp, held it in the water and he took it right from my hand. Only problem was that he looked like he was struggling to swallow it so when he spit it out I removed it, broke it in half, dropped it back in and he gulped it up easily. He’s currently sharing the tank with:
-Red tailed shark
-One male convict cichlid( moved him from the other tank as we was beating up the other fish due to his babies)
-A spanner barb which I previously returned to the fish shop but his friends were eating by an enormous cichlid. So when I saw how beat up he was I just said I’ll take him back for free.
-And 3, 1 inch long baby convicts which I’ve been struggling to catch to take to the fish store, however, so has my Oscar.

Glad to hear your oscar is warming up to you, the size of food is something you'll need to play around with, I started smaller and slowly got bigger pieces. My oscar spits food out then attacks it later, oscar fish are cichlids which they have a set of teeth near the throat, you might wanna keep an eye on the smaller fish as ocars grow fast and in the next couple months he may try and eat the fish lol I took this picture yesterday and as you can see mines grown almost an inch since I last spoke to you on this lol

Wow it’s crazy how fast they grow!! I fed him a small piece of earthworm today and he ate it right out of my hand which I’m very happy about. Still, once he’s eaten he isn’t up for any socialising which is rather annoying as he swims around peacefully then hides.

As for the other small convicts, I currently have another tank (45gal) with a female convict, around 50 3-4mm babies, a 2/3inch Senegal bichir, baby jewel cichlid and baby elec blue acara. So when the babies get big enough in the next (I’m hoping) month or two, I’ll sell them off or give them to my Lfs as they’re trustworthy imo. I’ll take the 1invh ones along with them too. However I may keep a few of the nicest looking ones. Not too sure yet

If it fits in his mouth he will eat it!!!

I was worried about this however he’s rather lazy and doesn’t chase them around as long as he’s well fed!!

You were right!! I only have one baby con left now
