Sad News About The Cow

Hey guys
A lot of you guys are familiar with The Cow, my black and white HMPK. He was one of my favorite bettas, he had so much personality. He wa doing so well in his divided tank, I went away on vacation for not even two days. When I got back, I did my usual fish check and everyone was fine until I got to him. I noticed his tail was completely gone, the only thing left were the tiny bones still attached to his caudal peduncle. This was not caused by another betta or disease, I'm 90% sure he scraped his tail on a rock I had in with him and it became infected and ate away his tail, leading to body rot. I isolated him I'm a heated 10 gallon and started dosing with Erythromycin. The day after we got back I ordered Kanaplex and paid for two day shipping, so it would get here before his Erythromycin treatment was over. It got here a day before as expected, and once the Erythromycin was done I started the Kanaplex. He was getting better, the internal bleeding was going away, I didn't see new fin growth, but I wasn't expecting him to regrow his tail. I woke up this morning to find him dead, I think the stress of the two medications was too much for him, either that or the body rot had started to eat away at his organs.

SIP buddy, I'm going to miss you

Thanks guys
I feel so guilty, the day he died a was browsing eBay and aquabid looking for look alikes just to see if there were any like him, because I had never seem another one with the same coloration as him, and I was only supposed to be looking. I ended up buying this guy. He's a HM, so not totally the same. He also came from a koi spawn, I'm not sure on Cow's parentage.

He just got here so he is acclimating.

I seriously don't think you should feel guilty.

"Just looking" has happened to me, too. Your new boy looks very interesting, I hope that you will share more photos!

As requested Ignore the dirty glass and tanniny water, I wasn't expecting him until tomorrow so I had to boot Niko out. I did do a 50% water change on there, you should have seen the tannins before! That driftwood will not stop leaching!
If anyone is curious, I bought him from drive24five on eBay. They are so sweet, I will definitely be buying from them again. Their fish are gorgeous as well!
He was the only one that turned out like this in the spawn, and is 4 months old.

Flowingfins, you buy a lot of your bettas from online. I have a split tank, and I'm not sure if I want to buy online (I didn't) because I won't know the approximate temperament of the fish. How do you go along with getting that type of info? like what if you buy a fish and he turns out to be too aggressive, and I don't have anywhere to put him except my split 20g, which he won't work in?

I would really like to start buying form breeders, but I'm nervous about the shipping of the fish, and the personalities, If you have tips that would be great!

He has an interesting, contemplative nature, doesn't he? At least that's how he comes across in photos...

You just gave me a great idea for a new thread!
Any good breeder will answer your questions, so don't hesitate to ask them. Make sure that have a very high rating, I wouldn't go less than 95%. I would also look for good quality pictures, a couple people on aquabid have pictures in tannin stained water, blurry pictures, and look out for obviously enhanced and photo shopped ones, I avoid those because I don't know what fish I will be getting. Check shipping prices before ordering as well, some bettas seem super cheap, bit when you look at shipping it's like $100 for priority. This boy was $30 including shipping. I would also look for obvious deformities in the fish. So far I have had a great experiences with ordering online, I did have one DOA, but that was because they got stuck in the post office for two extra days to to that huge blizzard a couple years ago.
I definitely recommend Sean on aquabid and drive24five on eBay, both are located in the US. Sean imports from Thailand and drive24five breeds the fish themselves. I would avoid ThaI or Indo fish the first time, because it takes a while for them to get here and you have to deal with transhipping and all that. Definitely ask about temperament, size, PH of their water, stuff like that.
I have found that most bettas will work in divided tanks, even my super aggressive HMPK as long as the divider is secure.

Right. Because after reading Flowingfins tips on online ordering, the first thing I did was go to ebay, and type in 'bettas for sale'. 'Cuz that's what I need: more bettas. Maybe I should just turn the studio into a rice paddy.

Two months ago:

My husband: "We have exactly enough room for a 36 inch long tank, next to these cabinets in the kitchen."

Last weekend:

My husband: "So...what do you want to do with these cabinets we had to move to make room for all of the aquariums?"

I'm so glad he's such a good sport.

Oh my, such bad influences you are!

The second part to that being that I had been floating the idea of taking my little table out of the studio, playing orchid tetris, and adding another few ponds. I guess now I just have to!
I was behaving so well, too- I only looked on ebay, and I even left behind another beauty at my LFS Sunday!

Hehe, I'm allowed as many tank as I can handle as long as they are in my room(minus the ponds and my "parents" tanks).
DO IT!!!!!! Get more bettas!
I'm writing up an "ordering bettas online" guide, I should have it up in the next few days if you want to order online.
I got him flaring! He's developed some yellow spots that I didn't see in the auction pictures, I think a yellow koi girlfriend is in his future
