Sad, but unfortunately true...

This is Australia's version of craigslist. Came across this post today, and boy was I sad.

The worst part - the asking price! They are never going to sell a 34.5 gallon tank for AU$700. Those poor oscars! (and friends)

That is sad! I see ads like that here all the time. Right now some guy is keeping 3 oscars in a bathtub. I guess at least it's big. Wish I could save them all.

Seriously? Dechlorinated, cycled, and everything? Is there an ad?

poor Oscars.

Ummm, my 18G cost more than $700 new, no stand, no stock
Tank $220, Filter $140, Substrate $70, Light fixture $140, Light tubes $100, Heater $70, Air pump ~$100, Other decorations ~$100 = $940 AUD
Then add about another $150 in flora and fauna.
Ok so maybe I indulge in some higher end equipment, but I think depending on what sort of equipment it is, $700 might be reasonable.
[please no comments necessary]

The sad thing is that the livestock will probably go with the tank, and probably never get a proper home

EDIT: The jawdrop was to the oscars in the bathtub.
Ryan, I agree with you about the oscars going with the tank. Sadly, these ads generally go to complete newbies who think "wow! I don't even have to set the thing up or watch the fish grow! What a bargain!".

And I know my 23G cost me about $1000 once I got everything set up, but that was brand spanking new. The cabinet & tank was about $650, then I had gravel, decorations, countless failed livestock and flora. Then I found Fishlore.

LOL at Cesch!

Further down the adverts I found this: "Fish tank (20 litre- good for 4 goldfish), ..., algae control ... sell for $50 or best offer. "
Hmmm... 5 gallon good for 4 goldies? Including algae control...
