Rose is dead

I came home from school for lunch and found Rose underneath one of the clay pots that is for my coolies. Her fins were all gone. I was treating her for fin rot with bettafix. Why must the beautiful die so young?

That's okay. She had been fighting fin rot sice I got her and she lost the battle after who knows how long. I might go and get another soon since I have all this betta food and no betta. My other fish in the big tanks don't like the food and the ones in the 10 gallon love it. Here is pic of her
.
You just need to scroll down a little bit.

I'm sorry to hear about Rose. Maybe she had something internally that you didn't know about and she wasn't showing any signs yet. They don't usually die of fin rot. Fin rot is really just a condition, not really a disease. Natalie

She most likey caught something from being in those containers for so long and you just didn't know about it. When I bought Royell he looked healthy as can be little did I know he wasn't until 2 1/2 weeks that I had him home. I just wish they were abe to provide them with tanks instead of those containers. They would have a much better chance of survival. Natalie

Petsmart sells very young females. I got mine there and they were only about 5-6 weeks old. Their males are usually 3 months or younger.

I am so terribly sorry to hear about the little Rose passing. It is always hard to have a loved fish or pet die and when they are young and so beautiful it seems even harder. I hope you are okay and you have my deepest sympathies.

If I can help at all please let me know. I am so sorry it took me so long that it took me so long to write this to you.

Ok. Like I said in one of the things, the position of your marker made it look like you were close to Winnipeg.

If you could tell me of a place that sells young female bettas at a resonable price that I can access close to where I live, that would be great.

I think to get the youngest ones, you'll want to find a breeder in your area by using google and/or the local telephone directory. I believe they're about 3-4 months old at the pet stores generally when they get them in?
Miami Aquariums seems to be a great source for healthy, spoiled Bettas although they aren't close to you.

I am going to second that and say that the absolute healthiest bettas come from Miami Aquariums and they will try their best to get you what you want. They send pictures of the ones they have and if you do not find what you want they will scout out what you ask for. I am not looking Anywhere else for my bettas anymore. They love their fish and as has been mentioned they feed them quality food and spoil them. They are healthy when you get them and they want to hear from you when they arrive and how you feel about them and what condition they arrived in. Most areas get them in one day or at the most two. They are beautiful and I would not trade mine for anything. See below for my first two. The blue/white I have not gotten a good pic of because he is a brat and will not stay still long enough so I will have to use his demo picture but he is really much more beautiful than that.

Rose that blue betta is magnificent. What kind is that? Oh fin rot would be even more difficult to bear on a fish with fins like that! Wow!

Knock on wood Alexander the Blue has never had a sick day in his life but he gets vitamins and I use Novaqua + which contains echinacea and vitamins for a water conditioner and he has always had premium food and yes he is a OHM (over Halfmoon) which is as much fin as you can get. His fins are so heavy he cannot even flare for anything. He was green when I first got him but color enhancing foods turned him the color you see. His diet is Atison's Betta Pro and HikarI Freeze Dried Bloodworms and NOT one other thing but a few pea treats. No experimenting with him.

Blaze the peach one, just passed away being attacked by the heavy snail population in his tank so I bought 3 Yo-Yo Loaches who are dining on snails heavily as I am typing here now. They will probably eat themselves sick but I do not know how to stop them and as far as I am concerned the sooner the better.

Marty Jr. is a little doll and is very young and a thorough brat. He is about 3 months old and challenges everthing. I love his enthusiasm and his playful attitude. He is always the first one awake in the morning and the last one to sleep at night. I can see him moving about for about 3 hours after the lights are off when the others have all gone nighty- nite. I have only had him for a chouple of weeks though.

In two weeks I will have Damon (or Demon), I have not decided which who is 2 months old and red as a fire engine. He is a little spitfire according to the owner at Miami Aquariums so I have a feeling that Demon just may win out. I am waiting to get the snail problem taken care of first.

nmwierman1977 - Thanks.
FLBettaCouple - They are beautiful bettas. I'm not sure if I want a male betta since I have a male guppy and an endler(bought as feeder). And right now my 10 gallon is the only place I would put her anyways and it is having a dew problems with pH/ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. I also might get one off of auqabid.com, they have a great selection there as well as some beautiful ones. I saw one that looks exactly like your angel. There was one yesterday that was selling about 5 for about $1US but I only want one.

I believe miami aquariums sells females too. Look carefully into the sellers on aquabid.com so you don't get one like the one who sent natalie the DOA betta. I'm sure it's a good place to get a Betta and I'm probably just a little leary of aquabid after than and other stories of fin rot, etc coming with a won Betta. Good luck with finding your new Betta, wherever that may be.

What do you mean by DOA? I probably heard of it just don't know what that is. The risk is just like bidding on something off of ebay. There are some really beautiful ones on aquabid and I can figure out the price but on miami aquariums the one I want(fin wise) is about $10-15 and I cna get one for about $3 here from Walmart. Plus I don't know if they ship to Canada.

dead on arrival.. the shipper had not put a cooling pack in and the betta literally cooked in shipping. True, online auctions have risk and deals.

The ones at Miami Aquariums are more because of them being halfmoons & all (like purebreed dogs) and walmart, petco, etc. sell mostly veil tails (like mixed breed dogs) so the prices are different. Crowntails seem to be about $7-8 there and are the next step up from veiltails. $10-15 is good for halfmoons, i've seen breeders charging $40-50 for one. I love all the Betta types and the main reason I want to order from Miami Aquariums is the way they care for their Bettas. That impresses me and I appreciate people who love their fish & treat them well. You can email them and they'll respond quickly from what I hear. They communicate well with customers or potential customers .. another nice thing that's almost a novelty these days.

She is gorgeous. Miami Aquariums does ship to Canada I believe. I think I have heard that from Javier. He sells females too. He has a store on eBay but you can always contact him direct if you want something particular. This little lady is fine though. The problem is finding someone who has a license to conduct business and import/export as your laws are murder where aquatic supplies and live fish are concerned if there is not a license involved. The fish can remain in quarantine for weeks.

Thank you on the compliement. Ya I know how much our laws can screw someone over. I tried ordering a piece of driftwood off of ebay but my parents said it might not clear customs since it is from the states and they might not let it through because it is a biological product, which doesn't make any sense to me.

Importing a fish or two for personal use is no problem. However, the best & safest way to do it is to have it shipped to someone just over the border and go pick it up and import yourself, if that is possible. Delays and problems come with large commercial quantities for resale. If a US/Asian seller uses a Canadian agent , that again is different, however, that agent takes care of all Customs dealings, and then forwards the fish on to you.

If a US seller uses a courier to bring it over the border, the courier charges horrendous rates - there is no duty on fish, and tax would only be charged if they could retrieve a minimum of $3.......in most cases they would not charge an individual person bringing a fish or two over anything. However, couriers call it "Customs fees" and tell you they are charged - and you must pay - they are not - they inflate the price and you pay and get ripped off.

I would never, ever recommend buying a fish on Ebay from someone who says they will Priority Mail or Overnight Express it into Canada. It will be delayed at Customs.

Best way is to use a seller ( US or Asian) that uses a Canadian agent or pick it up yourself.

Driftwood without bark can come into Canada, if from an aquarium store, or beach, no problem. The bark is the problem.

There is a Canada Customs website that is really helpful if you wonder about importing fish & stuff and there are toll free numbers. (www.cbsa.gc.ca)

( I just retired from Canada Border Services after 25 years)

Val ( still salivating since looking at Miami Aquarium web site...........unbelievably beautiful fish).

Then I guess the only thing I have to do now is find somebody that lives really close to the border. That might take awhile. Or I could just ask one of the local petstores if they can do a special ordr just for a female betta. I have done it before with my harlequins since there was a big loss of shipped ones about 1-2 months ago. Either way, I am still waiting for my tank to get reestablished again. When my platy fry leave or when I get the 20-25 gallon tank from the chiropracter, I am going to get my zebra danios back from a friends mom who took them since they mangled my angel a while back.

I just got an email back from Miami aquariums and just for one female betta it will cost me about $30. They had adised me that it would be too much to just buy one female. But all I want is one and my parents don't want me to get another aquarium and I don't want to divid my 10 gallon tank.. I just thought of putting her in my 36 gallon now, before it wasn't possible since I had the shark but now it is gone to a bigger home. My new question is, would I be able to have a female betta in my 36 gallon?

Would you be able to buy or make dividers (using the thread here at fishlore on that topic) for your 36g? You could probably put 4 female bettas in it with it divided and they'd still each have a lot of room to swim in.

I think 1 female betta would be happy in a 36g - just give her resting spots near the surface around the tank and safe decor to swim thru/around and she'll be all over her giant Betta palace.

For dividing the 36, my dad would be furious. He was the one who helped me build the stand and doesn't like it that I have so many loaches in the three tanks, a total of 6. I don't think he would like it if I divided my big tank into 4 parts just for one fish.

Well, you'd have 4 bettas then and each could have tankmates, like a few cory cats or otos if you give them some hiding spots, so you could have maybe 16 fish in it with it divided like that. Maybe even add a mystery snail for each of the 4 sections?

My parents are the ones who want me to go to Walmart but I just keep saying I would rather spend a few more $$ just to get a healthy one and have it live for a long time. Just out of curiousity, which one would you say is nicer looking?
