Rope Fish (and My Success With Them)

(This is my first thread I’ve posted so have mercy)
HI everybody, let’s start from the beginning , I noticed my LFS got Nigerian rope fish in stock. I wondered what the heck is that. I then, without a break researched for days about these awesome looking fish. I’ve thought about wanting a bichir but I knew those wouldn’t go great in my predominately rainbow tank.

Fast forward 2 weeks from reading the flyer with new stock. I head down to my LFS and buy 1, a male . Take him home . Instantly hid of course in the driftwood . But I noticed he instantly made friends with the small pictus catfish I keep in there. The cat fish, usually insanely skiddish (because he is solo I presume). Yet he and the rope got along perfectly . Then next day I went out and bought a female rope fish. Brought her home and of course watched her hide . And she too has Made friends with the catfish.

A 3 months later now. The rope fish and catfish are inseparable . And boy do I love keeping rope fish. They are very active , as they are equipped with lungs and gills, so they come to the floating driftwood I have and slither on top, just to breath the air . They hang around the bottom. They constantly look for places to sit and lay around . I’ve had no problems with them being aggressive toward smaller fish. Even some very small madigascar rainbows . Feeding them is even cooler , I’ll put blood worms in my fingers and they’ll eat from my hands. Just awesome fish to own.

I would recommend if you’re looking for a peacefull (from my experience, I advise excersising caution), very oddball , rare fish, that stays very active and is social, get a rope fish!

Ropefish are a favorite of mine as well. I have two in my 75. I will soon get 2 or 3 more as they are social and do enjoy company

Minimum tank size? Temp? Predatory on smal fishes (tetras, kuhlis, etc)?

I think you should keep them in groups of a minimum of three. They are predatory but are not as big as your typical polypterid. At least their mouth doesn’t get as big. So very small tetras and Kuhlis would definitely be at risk. I would say the minimum tank size is a 55 gallon. They max out at around 17 inches but will take several years to get that long. They aren’t your typical fish and are very flexible so you don’t need to worry as much about them being a longer than the tank is from front to back. I think A 75 gallon would be ideal as that is what I keep mine in. They can be picky eaters so patience is important. The most important thing to remember is that they are escape artists. Every gap in your tank lid needs to be sealed. I have duct tape around the back half of my lids to keep to them in the tank
