Hello everyone. I have some rocks I found and was wonder what the popular opinion is on the type of rock. I believe it’s a type of granite just not totally sure. If anyone knows or has an opinion on the matter that would be great. Thank

There's a way to test rocks to see if there safe for the aquarium. Using baking soda I believe. Mabee vinegar. Darn I can't remember. But you pour it on the rock and if it bubbles it's not safe.

Yah I have done those tests and the rocks do seem to be safe. I was just hoping to find out what they are before I use lots of them in a new setup. Things like how it affects the water hardness and stuff are things I'm going to look into once I have the rock identified.

Got ya. You could put the rocks in a bucket of water for a few days. Test the water before and after see if there's any difference.

I think you're dead on with it being a granite of sorts.

I thought it was mostly quartz, but a quick google lesson says it is granite, which contains several different types of crystals including quartz. It is igneous rock, which means it is probably aquarium safe and inert relative to water chemistry. The thing to watch for in igneous rocks is metallic ores. These do not respond to the acid/vinegar test, as that only tests for calcium based limestone, which is usually sedimentary.
