55 Gallon Tank RIP 55 gallon tank........my dreams are over .. :(

Dear Fishlorians,

I sadly have to inform you that my 55 gallon / 210 litre tank I have been speaking about for months well some bad stuff has happened. I spent all my savings as a 15 years old and got myself a large canister filter, heater, lighting, cabinet and more. I setup the tank last night and this morning I filled it up. All was well and so off to church I went with my family... when I arrived home we were welcomed to 200 litres of water and sand all over the middle level where the tank was and water going through the roof and down the stairs soaking carpet on the bottom level of our family home.....

Unfortunately even though we did a good reseal and water tested for a week outside for some reason while we where gone it leaked, no broken glass, no cracks just a hole broke through the silicone I believe. I've had to remove everything from the tank and it has been completely emptied, my parents aren't that happy with me as I'm sure you could all understand.....

As of now the wooden flooring isn't too bad, we dried it all up and but it did manage to leak through the flooring in one section of the room and down into my parent's bedroom and office on the bottom level... It has also tripped about 1/3 of all the electricals on the bottom floor.

They have now told me I am not allowed to bring that tank back inside and well... the cabinet has been disassembled and everything else too really.... i now am only allowed my smaller tanks and my big dream 55 gallon cichlid tank well...... it's lost for at least another 10 years or so till I move out....

I'm super disappointed and in total disbelief.

Just thought I would let you all know..

Sorry for the long post

Thanks for reading and I hope nobody's tank spring a leak.

Peter

Sorry to read this. Don't worry there's plenty of time to achieve your dream- if you did everything in your teens the whole life thing would be seriously boring- take it from a mid life crisis fishkeeper :)

Thank you,

It has been a disaster but hoping in a the future my parents may have a change in heart and let me try again... my birthday is the 17th of October so this was kinda a birthday present I got for myself and it's a real bummer it didn't work out.

Currently and wel pl for as many years as I can remember I've always said the moment I move outta home one of the first things I'll buy is a big tank.... idk but something like 100gallons +...... ah I look forward to that day

Sorry to read this. Can happen to anyone. At least you have your other tanks.

Had a similar experience with a 40g. Ended up throwing out a tank, stand and a carpet. If you ever set it up again, make sure the floor is level. I think in my case the tank may have been warped by the uneven floor.

This might be obvious, but I would try to return the tank so you can at least get your money back. But honestly, I felt sick reading this, I really feel for you.

I get you. It's super annoying when you buy stuff and organise all this planning and preparation then it fails and you have a home full of water
I checked it and air was level and so was the stand so not sure why this happened

I can't return the tank, it was 2nd hand although the previous owner never used it

I'll try to return the equipment for the tank which I may not need

Aw that really sucks for you. So annoying.

You did a leak test outside? Maybe it was the canister that leaked on you? Just a thought.

Possible. Or perhaps the tank was not well leveled?

Aww no :( sorry this happened. That truly sucks.

Your parents are more patient than mine would have been , all tanks would have been gone !

Are you sure it wasn’t your canister ?

Don’t get disheartened , although it’s a frustrating situation , you’ll get there . Thank ( insert chosen deity here ) that you hadn’t stocked the tank .

I'm so sorry you went through all of this.

I personally don't trust 2nd hand tanks. You have no idea what was done or how they were stored.

A leak has always been a major fear of mine.

My 55 gallon is on the slab with linoleum underneath ( I live in a ranch style home).

all my tanks have their own power surge protector as well.

keep your dream alive! I'd love 120 gallon tank. oh well, maybe 1 day...

You will get your dream tank 1 day, I'm sure. :)

And Happy Birthday, do not let this get your down. Life is full of unexpected events.

Thanks all for your encouragement no kind words.

The tank was level and the canister had not been plugged in yet. The front of the tank was spilling water and inside the cabinet was dry so wasn't the filter

Thanks all and the home is doing ok, floors are fine, office ceilings have water and the flooring there too.

Thanks.
