Return to the hobby with 75 Gallon Low Tech Planted

Electrotech

My return to the hobby after 5 years.

75 Gallon Marineland tank and stand
Fluval 407
Seachem Tidal 110 HOB
Fluval E series 300W heater
Fluval 59W plant 3.0 LED light

Eco Complete planted substrate
Dragon Stone and Driftwood hardscape

First plants went in today:
Bacopa Caroliniana
2 Microsorum pteropus “Java Fern
2 Echinodorus Amazonicus “Amazon Swords”

Have liquid ferts and root tabs on order to arrive tomorrow.

don’t mind the rocks laying on the large driftwood, it wanted to float, they will move once it wants to stay down.

I’ll start adding fish slowly after this cycles a bit. Going to be a bunch of nano fish.

Always liked the idea of small fish in a large tank. Makes it look like their natural environment. Tank looks great.

Can a cycle really be over in under a week? I didn't think so. It's either that or the API master test kit I have is wrong.

Tank was set-up and filled with water 6 days ago, I added plants from the LFS the next day along with 3 Cherry Barbs and Fritzyme 7 bacteria booster. The next day (4 days ago) I added more plants and 5 more Cherry Barbs because the 3 were very small in a 75 gallon, I didn't know if it would be enough bio-load to even cycle, plus they should be in a larger schoaling group.

Anyways I tested the water on Sunday (Day 3) and the Ammonia was .25, Nitrite was .25, and Nitrate was around 10ppm (Liquid fertilizer and root tabs were in for the plants)

Did a 50% water change that evening.

I tested my water this morning and 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and about 0-5ppm of Nitrate.

I think they can cycle that fast under the right circumstances. The combination of the bacteria booster, and the bacteria that would have come in on the plants must be doing the job for you.

I've never used those bacteria products, but I have cycled tanks with seasoned filter media in under a week. So when the microbes are there, its certainly possible.

I'd keep doing what you are doing, and gradually ramp up your stocking. Your tank looks great by the way. But keep testing frequently.

So went to the LFS today and decided to add some more fishies to the tank.

We got 10 Black Neon Tetras
9 Corydoras Juli
3 Honey Gouramis

so along with the 8 cherry barbs in the tank I think it’s stocked for a little while, I want to let it season for a little while before I add the centerpiece fish, they had some really nice Apistogramma Azzizzi which I want to get 1 make and 3 females.

My kids asked about a betta? Would that work in this tank?

Well trip to the LFS over the weekend added some new tank mates.

I was a little mad the LFS would only sell the Apostogrammas in "Pairs" as in you had to buy 1 male and 1 female together. From my research most Apistogrammas are harem breeders and I wanted to get 1M and 3F, but ended up getting 2M and 2F and hopefully they will be ok together in a 75 Gallon.

So new additions are:

4 Apistogramma Agassizii "Double Red"
1 Longfin Chocolate Bristlenose Pleco
1 Red and Blue VeilTail Male Betta
