Reshaping my 65 gallon into a jungle tank ^^

so I am working on reshaping my old 65 tanks instead of buying a 100gallon course I am sensible adult xD
the plan is a jungle feel, with a sand river ^^
Would love suggestions for plants!
also have some dark seiryu I am going to add, one pillar under in the sand river, and 3 under/ slight in front of the long root to the side
The plants will be on the root, some of the stones, and cover every inch of substrate that isnt the sand!

I would suggest vals, I started with just a few, and now it is SUPER thick through the entire tank.

I have had the same experience with Vals, they are good especially for the background. I started with two plants and now have them in all my tanks and have thrown some away. They seem to do well in various light conditions and both with and without fertilizers and are fine in just a sand substrate. I would also add some fast growing stem plants, the more plant mass you can get in there from the beginning the less likely you are to have issues with algae. The ones that have done well for me include Limnophila, Cabomba, Hygrophila polysperma and Heteranthera zosterifolia. Also good for covering the ground quickly is pearl weed (Hemiathus micranthemoides). It will grow tall in low light but it is best to keep it trimmed and it will form dense bushes (warning, it takes over the tank if allowed).
Then on your wood you can use epiphytes - java fern, Anubias and/or Bucephalandra, these are much slower growing.

You could create a plan for your aquascape.
I recommend anacharis if you want a jungle. I started with 5 and now I have to trim them every week!

I like vals too, mine are a light green, helps keep things from getting too dark.

Anubius nana, vals, and frogbit make it pretty weedy. I like to watch the fish swim around in the plants.

That was a lot of great suggestions! I will be looking up all those plants once I am done with the hardscape ^^

Beautiful piece of wood and I like the way you are going with the "river" separation. I think you will get an awesome tunnel/cave look through there - awesome potential!

I like vals as well in background - grows great in sand and propagates with runner plants.

Thank you ^^ it sounds like you got the same visions for this as I do :D

Nice! I’m also doing a tank (75 g) with a “river”. And like you, I want a jungle look. So far I have a “grove” of Italian Vals, anubias, and Java fern. When I tear down the 40 g that I’m upgrading, I’ll move the crypts from that tank.

So nice and it feels like a color reversal of what I am going for xD really love what you did with the river stones ^^

Thanks! The tank will have at least 13 dwarf chain loaches (I have 7 already in the 40 b and 6 currently in quarantine) so I definitely wanted the smooth river stones.

Honey gourami, cherry barbs, kubotai rasbora, hillstream loach, and trying to decide a second bottom dweller, preferable one that enjoys the sand, might go with a corydoras of some kind ^^
Very nice! I keep cherry barbs and kubatoi rasbora but in other tanks.

I know they’re kind of basic, but Java ferns are my favorite scape plants.

Here are some of my tanks. Once they grow into the space they really add character and would compliment that lovely peace of wood well.
Val’s are great plants if you want to quickly fill in space but I’ve had them before and gotten rid of them because they grow so straight and I felt like didn’t have much character, so I would consider that especially if going for a “jungle” tank look. However, when used sparingly I think they could also have the potential to add something to a tank.

Maybe you should give corkscrew vals a chance.

That’s true.. I do like those better for sure, although my personal preference likes the broader leaved plants haha

This is my "jungle" tank, photo taken back in November last year, I don't seem to have more recent photos of the whole tank, and lights are off at the moment, but now it is even more "jungly" despite frequent trimming. This tank has the species I mentioned in my earlier post. I forgot to mention the tiger lotus, which was a bit slow to grow at first but now is a lot bigger, and the amazon swords.

I looked them up and I do love the structure the screwing of the leaves give! :D
