29 Gallon Tank Researching Types Of Fish For My Aquarium

Hi. I'm researching species of fish to stock the 29 or 30 gallon aquarium I am going to get. I really like the dwarf gourami, but apparently you can only put 1 male in a tank. Can I put a dwarf gourami with a honey gourami? How many could I put in a 30 gallon? I am debating whether to have a tank with a few larger fish or a tank with smaller fish? Any suggestions? The pH of my tap water is around 8 and I don't want to use chemical to adjust it. Also, I want a one gender tank - no babies! I could use some ideas.

I wouldn't put DGs with honeys... Personalky that has only ended in disaster. You can have a few honey gouramis. Usually around 3 works. (2 girls, 1 boy but you won't see eggs). I don't reccomend having dwarf Gouramis since human have inbred them for so long that DG disease is almost inevitable. You may not be able to get a lot of species unless you lower that ph. Or if you can find a local honey gourami breeder that raises them in that ph. What about:

x3 Honey Gouramis
x10 Neon Tetras
x8 Panda Cories
x1 Albino Bristlenose Pleco
At 72-74f

Thank you so much for your help. Would Cardinal Tetras work instead of Neons? I really like that combination. So, the honey gouramis wouldn't breed?

Never had it happen to me! Plus, they really only breed in soft water. Cardinal Tetras like warmer water than all the other fish listed, but have you checked out the nano fish like chilI rasboras, ember tetras, and endlers? I personally LOVE chilI rasboras and honey gouramis together.

All three of the nano fish would be excellent. Can I keep all males of them.

Cherry barbs could do well too. Smaller colorful fish, said to be the most peaceful barb. I'm planning a 29 gallon around them and honey gourami.

Yeah, they are really pretty too. Don't know how I'll ever decide!

You'd probably have to do one of the schooling fish, and then the endlers.
Endlers should definitely be all males, but chilis and embers won't breed if you have a mix. You could do:

x3 Honey Gouramis
x15 ember tetras / chilI rasboras
x6 Male endlers
x8 panda cories

That sounds great! That combination would be perfect Since it will be a brand new tank, which fish would be best to put in first and how many?

Normally, you want to introduce least aggressive to most aggressive. But in this case, as long as the tank is cycled and the honey gourami goes in last you should be fine. (IMO)
Edit: By last, I mean like a week later (give or take a few days.)
Ps. Apparently, my punctuation is atrocious today. I apologize in advance.

RainBetta. Thank you for your advice. I love the combination you suggested, but it seems like a lot of fish for a 29 gallon tank.

So, a few more questions.
If I put plants in my tank, does it cut down of the number of fish I can keep?
Any thoughts on Danios for this tank?
What are your thoughts on GloFish?

Live plants in your tank increase the number of fish you can keep, if anything.

Yueh, 8 ph is African Cichlid range. They have true believers and some who don't like them. they are aggressive, but very beautiful fish. I believe they are somewhat small.

I think that the cichlids that you want are shellies or shell dwellers.

Neolamprologus brevis
Lamprologus ocellatus
Neolamprologus hecqui
Neolamprologus multifasciatus

High Ph, no plants, just soft sand and shells to live in. Very interesting fish with a cool social life. I have heard they breed readily so even when you start with just a few, you get a larger population over time.

ChilI rasboras don't even grow to a full inch, so you can actually have quite a few of them, but it can't hurt to get rid of some fish! How about:
x2 Honey Gouramis
x15 chilI rasboras
x6 Panda cories

So, a few more questions.

Plants take up swimming space, so kind of.

I'm not really a fan of danios or glofish. IMO glofish are unnatural and ruin a good planted tank. That's just me though! My friend's glofish died and the artificial colors started seeping out of the glofish it turned the water many colors.

I was wondering if GloFish are actually natural. Thanks

I was wondering if GloFish are actually natural. Thanks

The original line was genetically modified by inserting jellyfish dna into a single cell embryo or egg..?. They breed true now and aren’t painted dyed or injected. So not natural but not tortured either.

If that happened that’s not a glofish then. These are natural pigments encoded by jellyfish dna incorporated into the fish genome

I think they look cool in a planted tank. Set them up for my kid who begged for them ..they grew on me..

Would you put all glofish or mix them with regular coloured fish?

I have high pH like you. I have all community tropical tanks. My fish stocking for the tanks is listed in my profile. I have a range of fish that "prefer" a lower ph than I have, but all of the fish acclimate in my case just fine.

I believe those are GloFish Tetras, the non-long finned version. I have about 12-14 in my 75 gallon tank, along with a ton of regular fish.

They look great under a blue led I have on a timer.

May I make a suggestion for bottom dwellers? about 6-8 corydoras (of the type you like) and 6-8 kuhlI loaches would be fun to watch. I have about 12 peppered cory's in my 75 gallon and 4 albinos in my 20g. Corydoras are great little fish.

A lot of people post about how their kuhli's hideout a lot during the day. Mine come out all the time! They need a couple of different hiding spots to make them more comfortable.

Thank you. I was think of Corys. Do you think snails would be OK in the tank. Will they add to the bio load?
