Rescued Betta Health?

Hi!
I’m looking for advice for my new Betta. I rescued him from Meijer earlier this week. Since moving in with us he has been eating more, his color has been getting deeper, and he is more active.
He was pretty mangy and had trouble with buoyancy on day 1- overall he is looking healthier- but still looks pretty beat up.

I think his fins are damaged from his previous living environment but since he is a Crown Tail I’m having trouble figuring out if he has fin rot.

Some of his fin blades appeared broken, healing poorly, and/or growing in a swirl? I noticed the ends of two of the worse blades are turning white. I also think he may have a few new tiny black spots on his chest (not bilateral)?

I’d love any and all kind and constructive advice.
Thank you.

The third picture with his tail rays extended shows that he's actually not in as bad of shape as he may look when he's not fanned out.

If you can, you should consider picking up an aquarium heater and small, gentle filter and reading up on the nitrogen cycle. This will benefit him more than any medication will!

Agree with above. Clean water in a cycled tank can work miracles.

Until you can get a filter and start cycling, it would be good to also pick up some seachem Prime - it's a water conditioner and dechlorinator. It's great because it will also detoxify ammonia and nitrites that build up due to fish waste.

I would also do frequent water changes. I can't tell what size his bowl is, but anything smaller than 2 gallons would need to be changed every other day.

If you have access to it, I would also buy some Indian almond leaves. They release tannins into the water that are very beneficial to bettas. They help prevent and heal fin rot.

I wish you luck! He's a beauty!
