Rescued Angelfish - I have some questions

I'll just prefix this by saying I rescued these fish and I've only had them a week; I'm now just trying to do what's best for them.

As you can see from the pictures, the black Angelfish has been badly bullied (from my understanding, for years), which isn't something I can tolerate now they are in my care; so I've separated them.

The white Angelfish has been moved to my 60 litre QT, and the black has remained in the 130 litre tank.

I'm assuming this fighting/bullying has happened because they are both males, but could anybody help me confirm that?

Obviously a 60L tank is not big enough for an Angelfish, so I'm looking to re-home it. Will the black Angelfish be OK without another of his type, or do I need to look into getting a female (presuming he is a male)?

So, in summary:

  • Could somebody help me identify their genders?
  • Can Angelfish live alone? Researching tells me they CAN live in pairs, but it seems like they'd be fine solo?

Hi

Ahww the poor black one :( ... Surprised it can swim with its fins. Give him the best quality foods you can find and aim for pristine water. Maybe he will recover, I doubt fully however.

As for their genders. I would say they are both males as a guess. Not sure but I think I can see the point of the breeding tube on the white angel.

Angels are fine solo or in a group. Once a pair forms from a group and they spawn there will be aggression. So a breeding pair are happy together but I found mine so aggressive to their tank mates and me I actually rehomed them.

Ideally you will want a tank that has good depth as angels get taller than long.

Mine is fine on his own. As wouldratherwatchaquarium said it’s usually breeding pairs that cause aggression but some angels can just be more aggressive towards others, agree with the pristine water too. Could you take the white one to a lfs maybe ? Then put the other temporarily in the qt tank to maybe treat whilst he recovers. Sexing angels is hard until they are breeding . The poor black one ! That’s some serious fin nipping , hope s/he recovers !

Thanks for the replies Wouldratherwatchaquarium / Blacksheep1 :)

Seriously. It makes me sad to know he's been in this situation for years.

I do a weekly 50% water change, with frequent tests to ensure the water quality is as good as can be for all my tanks :)

As for their genders. I would say they are both males as a guess. Not sure but I think I can see the point of the breeding tube on the white angel.

Thank you!

Excellent, ok. I'll re-home the white one and keep the black on his own; I couldn't bare re-homing the black one after everything he's been through.

He definitely seems like he has enough room to swim around; the measurements are roughly 90cmx35cmx40cm (129 litres).

Mine is fine on his own.

Awesome, I'll leave him on his own then :)

Could you take the white one to a lfs maybe ?

That's exactly what I'm going to do tomorrow.

hen put the other temporarily in the qt tank to maybe treat whilst he recovers.

I'm going to hold off on treatment unless it becomes absolutely necessary; he seems much happier now I've moved the white one out, even coming up to the glass to say hello haha.

I know. The person I rescued them from said they're about 5 years old, so I can't imagine what he's gone through.

It sounds you haven’t it all in hand and are handling it like a pro ! I hope the little fella makes a full recovery and lives many more happy years
