Rescued A Betta Fish!

so me and my boyfriend just rescued a betta fish, he'd been in this tiny box for a year, had no food when we got him and was all white and had a scale problem.
We've never kept fish but wanted to help the little guy so we got him a 5l tank and water heater, medicine and water conditioner (and betta food obvs!) it's been 3 weeks and we've been learning lots about him or quite possibly her...she looks healthier and happier every day and getting some red on her too now. We are getting a 10 gallon tank and water filter on monday when the shops open.
I'm looking for advice I guess as I'm new! I think she had or has ammonia burn from being in such poor conditions and now has a small black line on one gill, is this the infection coming out of the lungs?! Here's a picture of her now...
Thanks for any help! Looking forward to getting her health up!! She's so interactive too, it that normal for betta fish? Love Her!!

HI there,
Welcome to FishLore! It's very kind of you to rescue this fish. Your right, the fish has probably gone through some ammonia burn throughout its time. May I'm know what medication he is on at the moment?
Thanks!
Edward

Hi! Welcome to fishlore !
You have done a great job by saving such a beautiful betta. It is a male betta and there is a issue with his fin. I can't see the black line on the gills. Maybe it is normal.
Aquaphobia keeps betta and he can help you.

Based on the fins I'd say it's a he!! I see some fin issues but it's hard to get a really good look. Bettas ALL have personality. Some are lazy, some love toys, some like fuzzy plants it's wonderful!

I'm glad he's (male without a doubt) being upgraded to a 10g! Way to do!

As far as advice goes, the best thing you can do is to have a test kit with which you can monitor his water's parameters (The API freshwater master test kit is not too expensive off Amazon) and give him water changes, at the absolute least, once a week. His fins will grow back in no time if his water is kept pristine!

HI and welcome to the forum! Very pretty male Berta you have there

He actually looks fairly healthy in the pictures apart from some minor fin damage. He should heal just fine with frequent water changes.

Bit concerned about what kind of "medicine" the shop sold you, there's a lot of snake oil out there

Also, while Bettas do have a labyrinth organ which they can use to absorb some surface air they don't have lungs.

I also don't think he has a scale problem! He's partially covered with metallic scales but that a normal thing. He's probably a calico or koi and the presence of the thicker scales seems to be affected by that

Sure, thanks so much! Here's a pic of the conditioner, medicine and food we have got so far, we grow micro greens and just fed him a tiny bit of broccolI baby leaf! We will also grow in the big tank and get some treats to vary his diet

Aww thank you
Heres a pic with the conditioner, medicine and food we have so far. We put one ml of conditioner and 1ml of medicine every 5 days and about 6-8 pellets of food a day, water change, I will do a 25% water change everyday until he looks better

Ah ok, no more veg or medicine then?

The conditioner only says it neutralizes chlorine and heavy metals. If you can get one that also takes care of ammonia and nitrites that would be better!

The Dajana Multicure looks like a decent product but I don't think you need to use it right now. I also saw in the description of Aquavital that it should not be used while medicating.

The food is good. I would be careful feeding any cruciferous vegetables to your Betta. They are more likely to cause gas and since Bettas are carnivores they are less able to handle it.
