Rather than buying replacement filter cartridges every 6 weeks and loosing a load of bb every time what is that best foam/sponge i can replace the cartridges with that will last a long time. This is for a marina i160 filter.

I would try and find the appropriate sized Aquaclear sponges (LFS, box stores, Amazon).

It's difficult to answer without knowing what specific filter brand and type you have, but since you said cartridge I assume it's similar to the Aqueon Quiet Flow 50 I have on my 40 gallon tank. For that one I tossed the cartridge but kept the plastic part that the cartridge slides into. I bought a sheet of filter material at the pet store that I cut to fit in that holder instead of the cartridge.

And I don't replace it every 6 weeks. Every couple weeks I take it out and rinse it in water and then put it back. When it does need to be replaced I cut a new one, but leave the old one in the tank until I rinse the new piece so bacteria has a chance to colonize the new one before I toss the old one.
