Repashy Food for Fish

Has anyone tried the new Repashy food for fish? They are known for their reptile foods, and have just this year expanded into fish foods. The videos on the home page are quite interesting. This food is a powder that is mixed with hot water to create a gel. And, it can be left in a fry tank all day with no mess and no ammonia issues!!!

Tonight I ordered the Community and the Meaty foods to give it a try.

On another forum someone is using this food and their angels are spawning like never before!

Good morning Dena,

Here is another thread, recent, on the same subject:

Thanks Ken. I missed that thread. Only one other response. I know fish don't take to new food forms, and have to be introduced slowly.

Will just have to try it and write a review.

Ha! You've never met my guppies, then! Anything is food, to them...

I'll be looking forward to your review

Interested in the reviews, will be following.

Our fish are currently going nuts for "Plecocaine", which is a formula we got from a member of Aquabid. I cannot recommend this stuff enough. I ordered a pound, split between 2 sizes (so half a pound each), and I got half a pound of the 2 formulas, plus a nice sized sample of every other size (I think, it was several bags), plus a sample of algae wafers and spirulina powder. There was a even a human treat included- a little Ziploc with an assortment of candy.

Received my order of Repashy yesterday. I received 4 ounces of Community and 4 ounces of the Meaty formulas.

The directions on the packaging state to mix 1/4 cup of the food powder with 3/4 cup cold water. Then microwave 2-3 minutes until starting to boil. Or, to boil water on the stove. Remove from heat and stir in the powder.

Very simple steps to make the gel!

I mixed up a batch of the Community formula; about 1 hour the gel was set. Downside here is the fact that this food stinks!! It isn't strong, but does smell a bit like something has gone bad.

Cut it into small cubes for feeding. My closest tank is the 125G community tank. I dropped in 2 small cubes. In less than 5 minutes, the fish discovered this new food. And the Clown Loaches started fighting with the Silver Dollars for a bite of the new food. The Rainbowfish and Angelfish showed little to no interest. And the Common Pleco isn't yet out for the night.

I also dropped a cube into my snail/fry tank. I have never seen the snails in such a tight ball trying to get at the new food!!! The snails are 3 deep trying to get a bite.

Initial results are mixed, but this is also my fish's first exposure to any type of gel food. So, things are looking very promising!

As each batch only lasts a couple of weeks, in the fridge. I plan of offering the Community batch until gone. And, will then mix up a batch of the Meaty formula. I'm hoping that my angels will be more interested in the Meaty formula.

I will update this thread and will take pictures or videos this coming weekend.

Great! I'm glad someone's testing out this food. How much will four ounces of the powder make?

I'll be keeping an eye on this

Do you think you could get away with cutting the 'recipe' in half? How much does a full batch make, anyway?

See, I ask about this in a thread and it gets turned down. I knew it had to be atleast somewhat promising, its rephashy for fish sakes. XP. Thanks for the review.

I plan on keeping track of this. But it will make quite a lot! With only using 1/4 cup of the powder, I can't tell any has been removed from the pouch.

Each recipe yields 1 cup of gel food. I thought about cutting it in half, but that would mean 1/8 cup powder and 3/8 cup water to yield 1/2 cup food. And I couldn't find an 1/8 cup measure.

There are 16 tablespoons in a cup

so a 1/8 cup measure is 2 Tbs. scoops(level)

You two are funny! If I wasn't so tired I would have realized that any measure could work so long as I stayed with the 1:3 ratio.

But seriously, having 7 tanks running, and I may set up another for shrimp this weekend, 1 cup of gel food is about right.

I put the extra in a Ziploc bag in the fridge. And if I wanted I could try to freeze it short term too.

I'm glad there's a review on this . I tried the soilent green and my hillstream fishes love it. They like it more than the old MazurI gel food I use to try and feed them. Haven't tried the meaty yet. Let us know how it goes as I was thinking of trying it on my fishes too. I think 4oz makes almost 2 pounds of food but I'm not too sure (estimate given to me from seller who I bought the soilent green from). When I make the soilent green, I don't measure. Just pour in hot water, some powder, stir, and let it turn to gel.

That's great news Dillon!

So, have offered this new gel food to all my tanks 2 or 3 times now. And with the exception of the adult angels, all my fish, shrimp and snails swarm after this food.

I made up a batch of the Meaty formula today. It doesn't smell quite as bad, but it is the color of dirt. Couple that with the smell and your instinct is to throw it in the trash. It is currently setting up. So will offer it tonight and see if my angels are more interested.

Definitely is a food I will continue offer to my fish!

One other thing I've noticed is that my tanks are very clear....and today is my water changing day. My tanks look like they do AFTER the changes!! I will be taking water parameters on every tank this afternoon to see if there are any changes in parameters.

I find this an unexpected result. I normally have an issue with TDS in my planted tank. Too many plants, not enough current and unable to gravel vac most of the tank. Most of the time I have "dust particles" in the water by water changing day. NOT TODAY!!!

Saw on another forum where it was offered to many adult angels. And all pairs (something like 8 pairs) were constantly breeding!! It will take time to determine if that is the food or just a coincidence. But the way I look at it, if it had any help with the mass breeding, then this must be a healthy food.

The fact that the primary ingredients are meat products or algae products is something that is of interest to me. This is one reason I switched my flakes to Omega One. Whole fish as the primary ingredient.

Took a few videos of my fish fighting over the Community formula. Will attach them as soon as the videos are uploaded.

That's great to hear Dena! I am waiting for a PayPal transaction to go through, then I will be ordering some.

Which kind would you recommend? I don't know if I want the community or meaty formula.

I haven't yet offered the Meaty formula to my fish! But....

Community is mostly algae with some meat products in it. It is designed for a community tank. Snails, shrimp and fish all like this formula.

And, as I have many cichlids, I ordered the Meaty formula. I imagine they would appreciate this one more than the Community.

There are other formulas to choose form. One that is all algae and one specifically for shrimp and inverts. I may try them too.

I purchased this food from Ted Judy. Here's the link to his website: . He shipped the day after receiving payment. Very nice service!

Ok, so let me ask you this about it, how do you feel for the price you paid as far as quantitiy goes? I am running out of the last container of store bought food and I was starting to wonder what to feed next....

I was debating between a few but this has my interest now.

I ordered 4 ounce pouches and each batch uses so little that it will last a long time. Well worth the price.

can you give an idea of how much you use to make up a batch? or maybe the proper mixing directions?

The mix is 1 part powder to 3 parts water.

I used 1/4 cup on the Community Plus formula. And today I used 1/8 cup on the Meat Pie formula.

Each batch lasts about 2 weeks in the fridge. I cut the gel into cubes and dropped into a Ziploc bag. Real easy to take from the fridge, let sit a room temp for a short time, and drop into the tank.

No more than I've used, the powder will last a very long time!

Pricing is fairly comparable. I paid $30 for two 4 ounce pouches of powder. The same order on Kens would be $1.80 less.

Sorry to thread jack but when you mix the powder with water do you use dechlorinated water or water straight from the tap?

I used bottle water to avoid chlorine. But, as the water is boiled, I doubt that chlorine would be an issue.

Oh thanks, cause I thought that if the fish eat the tap water it would be bad for them.

The worse a food smells the better the fish like it.

Years of making homemade fish food to back that up.
