Red wine shrimp

Hi there,

I no longer have a tank since I moved back to my home country, but I am slowly slooowly saving up for a shrimp tank. My so far favorites are the red wine shrimp, but due to lack of availability i would have to order from abroad.
Question is : do they breed true (i.e. only produce more red wine) or can other variations appear?

Another question is how quicly do they multiply and what's the survival rate?

And finally, is there any other shrimp that I could mix with them, without the risk of crossbreeding? Would love a color contrast

I've had shrimp before for 2 years, but only neocaridinas, therefore I am unfamiliar with the specifics of the caridina genus.

You will always find with cherries that you can cull around 30% of each hatch because of a fall off in colour so they won't breed true,

From first hatch to breeding is around 5months, once they start breeding its around once a month to 6 weeks

there are a lot of factors to bare in mind for survival rate, mature tank, predators, water perameters, food like bactoe ae scientifically proven to enhance survival rate,

You can mix Babulti with cherries, although they are caradind they won't cross but will breed amongst themselves,
You can mix other Caridina but the setup must be finally tuned using ro water and is not something I'd recommend to anyone who as not kept caradina and used to the mixing of minerals to keep your water stable as there's no room for errors

Hi all,
happah I do not have any caridina shrimp but.
Having listen to local club presentations on the subject I know enough to say they are far more sensitive than neocaridina ( cherry shrimp) .

I don’t have the inclination or time to cull cherries for colours but suggest a second tank would give you the opportunity to cull hard from the main tank and keep an eye on the reject juveniles as the mature. The juveniles will not show their true colours at first. When you have dozens of shrimp having young at different times it could be hard to tell the age of the juveniles as you net out what you can catch on a particular day.

A cull tank does not have to be fancy. A bucket or plastic container on a window sill with a sponge filter may be enough if you can get away with the look in your house?

I was asking about red wine shrimp, not cherries. Does this 30% cull rate you talk about also apply to red wines? And if so, what do the culls look like (to they get more transparent/ do they get mostly white, what happens?)
With cherries I know that a certain percentage of the offspring become more transparent, and if allowed to reproduce, will soon give wild specimens. But I had my fun with neocaridinas, had a nice colony numbering hundreds in a well planted community tank. Now I want to try something new.

I am aware that caridina have specific requirements and I would have to use remineralized RODI/distilled water. I was asking about the survival rate because I read on some older articles that that rate was around 10-20%, which seems quite a bit low to be honest. I would be interested in a planted cube - 30l, with only shrimp and maybe some celestial pearl danios, nothing else.

You can mix other Caridina but the setup must be finally tuned using ro water and is not something I'd recommend to anyone who as not kept caradina and used to the mixing of minerals to keep your water stable as there's no room for errors
Well everyone who breeds caridinas had to start somewhere, not sure how I could get the experience of caring for caridina shrimp if I never have some.

My apologies happah I had to just now research the red wine shrimp to see they are a colour form of Taiwan bee shrimp. There are so many common names for minor colour differences in cherry shrimp that lead to my mistake. Sorry about that.

first off you said youve not kept caradina and my reply to that part is to what ive stated stated and quite clear anyone who as not kept caradina should not try and mix both specias together until you have experience with the mixing as theres a fine line in parameters keeping both together,
mixed up red wine with red cherry in your question !sorry! red wine do not breed true, i tried them a few years ago and found varying depth of colour which is known as traits depression, also found i only gt around a dozen in a batch

Oh, I didn't mean to say I want to mix neos and caridinas. I meant if I can mix 2 caridinas together and still get quality offspring variations. Say for example, mixing red bees or red wines and blue tigers.

I breed super red crystal which are high end crystal bee, they are very slow to do this and I think its because you are stretching the strain but I could be wrong, you will also find these by some classed as red wine, but not to me, heres a picture of mine.
Now if you can't do what you hope due to availability think about crossing Tangerine tiger with either crystal reds or black bee, I have a tank for each going at the moment but its taken over a year to get to F2 these are looking nice but still not right, I started with a dozen of each and still find although both species in the tank I get a lot of same species still breeding together and I can't explain it,
The 3rd is f2 with eggs this is the crystal bee and tangerine
I honestly believe when you start mixing them they breed slower and I think the strain is so fragile your losses are greater but each shrimp can bring between 30$+
In the uk some of my super reds can bring 10$ but I sell all grades around 1$ may be a bit more
Look for private breeders i know in the uk Romanians do a lot of shrimp
