I have two red ear slider turtles about 4 inches big and a tank eith neon tetras, bloodfins and a pleco. would it be a good idea to mix these together? I read on some websites turtles are able to live with fish and on other websites that they’ll eat the fish but I still don't really know much about either side. can someone fill me in

Turtles will chase down and eat fish they can catch. I would not put them together. Turtles are also very messy and though their mess will not harm them because they do not breathe the water, it can kill fish.

Hello. My roommate brought home a red ear slider and threw it in my 75gallon tank that houses my fish. (So far he hasnt chased or killed any). My question is what the best way to feed my fish and the turtle without them eating eachothers food?

Its a 75gallon with sand, a marineland hob, above tank basking area. The fish are 1 full grown blood parrot, 1 young blood parrot, 1 electric yellow cichlif, 6 cory cats, and 7 platies

It'll likely eat all of your fish, or at least try to. Turtles with fish rarely works out. Even if he isn't attacking now, you could easily wake up one day to no more fish. It happened to me with two different turtles, and my friend with three. Neither of us keep fish with turtles anymore.

Corys are one of the more dangerous fish to keep with turtles. They have very sharp fin rays, which could injure the turtle if it were to attempt to consume them.

The slider will eat the cories, platies, the yellow cichlid, even the young parrot if it can get hold of them when it grows big enough to catch and eat them. I am not sure whether it will eat the adult parrot or not. Maybe the turtle will eat it too when it grows big enough. Housing turtles with fish is always risky unless you are keeping large fish species like common pleco, oscar, giant gourami, pacu, etc. The turtle can eat anything it can prey as it grows big. The fishes will rest at some point and then it will be easy for the turtle to catch them. It might not be attacking them now or chasing them but most likely it will eventually. Also sliders need a proper light for them to bask which is different than aquarium lights. I am not sure whether you have that kind of light that is needed by a turtle since you didn't mention anything about light.

I think I see a basking area with the proper lighting above the tank. Thanks for mentioning that though, incase I'm wrong.

I think your roommate should get their own tank honestly. I understand the convenience of just adding on a basking area to a large established tank but this wont work out if you want to keep those fish around.

Agreed with others the turtle needs its own aquarium if you intend to continue to keep the fish as pets. The turtle itself will need 75 gallons and very heavy filtration

Yeah, that happens with notifications sometimes. Not really sure why. Sounds like a good plan! Let’s hope he leaves the fish alone until then.
