about two weeks ago my beta started developing a red dot on his mouth and i didn’t think much of it but now it’s spreading and there’s a lot and he’s having trouble eating. Does anyone know what this is and how i can get rid of it? I also started treating him with aquarium salt about week ago for his fin rot
currently he’s in a five gallon tank with a sponge filter
ph 7.5
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates under 5 ppm
temperature 78°F

Ditch the salt it's too late to treat with it.. That is a very very bad mouth infection. It is either columnaris or cotton mouth. Get the betta into a hospital tank with an airstone and heater set to 75F and a fake plant for betta to rest on and treat with API fungus cure and erythromycin together ASAP. Do not use a regular filter with carbon, just an airstone. follow the dosing directions carefully. Make sure to do every other day 50% water changes and do the math to redose the meds for the newly added water to maintain the proper dosage. Feed very lightly every 3 days to avoid toxin buildup in the water.

You still need to figure out why this happened in the first place. Infections like this are only caused by either contamination from another animal or neglect of tank maintenance. Especially since the poor thing also has fin rot.

How much do you feed?
How often do you do water changes?
Do you vacuum the substrate?
What do you use to test water parameters and how often do you test?
Do you ever clean the filter media?

i feed him 6 pellets every other day
i do a 50-75% water change every 2 to three weeks
i vacuum the substrate each time i clean the tank
i use the api master test kit and i test 3 days after a water change and right before i change the water
i clean the the sponge filter every other water change in the tank water

You are not doing water changes enough for a tank that small. You should do either 2 25% WCs a week or one 50% weekly. Pimafix does not work as a treatment, more of a preventative thing like using bactine spray on a fresh cut. If you have access to petsmart or amazon or chewy then you can get the api line of meds there.

ok thank you so much! right before he got the fin rot i added some new plants and a piece of driftwood and got a huge outbreak of brown algae do u think that could’ve played a role in him getting sick?

No algae can't cause disease in fish. How long has this tank been set up? Did you cycle it before adding the betta?

the tank has been set up for a few months now. it wasn’t cycled when i put in him but i did use a sponge filter from a cycled tank and added some beneficial bacteria before i put him in

Given the info you provided I'm having a hard time figuring out how he got such a bad infection. Any tank mates? Do you have any fish in other tanks with health issues? Have you gotten any new fish recently (even in other tanks)?
