I've been doing some research on the red devil cichlid. I want to get one but want to make sure I provide a good life for him.

So in my research pretty much everywhere I looked agree that the red devil gets to 15" but a 55 gallon tank is fine for one.

Why is a 15" red devil okay in a 55 but a 12" oscar is not okay? Is there something different about the red devil i haven't read about? Just seemed wierd to me.

If anyone has any info on the red devil please let me know .

A 55 gal. Is big enough for a Green Terror, pair. The males usually grow to 9 - 10 inches. The females, 6 - 7 inches. My best male GT grew to just under 10 inches. 20210109_095333.jpg

I was wondering this too, I just didn’t think to make a thread. Maybe they’re not as active? Although the bioload for a red devil would probably be higher considering how much more bulky they are.

Yeah and I know some fish(very rare) like a smaller tank as apposed to a larger one. I don't think the red devil is in that category though. I just found a really good deal on a 55 and am just trying to talk myself Into getting it for a red devil it just seems too small to me.

IMO, a 55 gal. tank should only be considered a grow out tank for a male Red Devil or Midas.
A 90 gal. would be a good minimum sized choice for a solo "wet pet" Red Devil.
A tank of 200+ gal. might provide enough space for a pair, or a small group of tough tankmates. like a Texas Cichlid or Jaguar Cichlid, ect.
Be aware, Red Devils / Midas have teeth, & no fear of your hand. They will bite & are capable of causing serious injury.

Yeah almost every video I've watched has said that the red devil will bite anything that enters the tank. They just seem to have such strong personality. I like fish like that.

I suppose I could get the 55 and use it for a green terror Instead. Ive wanted one of those too but the one I got was too crazy and almost killed my oscar so I had to return it.

I adore green terrors! I didn’t even realize those were an option for a 55!
