Recommendations For Tank Upgrade?

I’m looking to upgrade my fish tank in summer when I make a little more money. I want to upgrade to a higher gallon, as well as get a sponge filter for my betta.

What are some cool looking, “modern” fish tanks that are under 10 gallons? I’m looking at some nice Imagitarium 6.8 gallon tanks, but I’d like to know if there isn’t something out there that’s similar yet has more room for a sponge filter and a heater.

There is the fluval flex aquarium (in 9g and 15 gallon sizes) which has huge room for filtration, amazing colourful leds (over 30 colours, night mode etc.) and has a bowfront.

Interesting! I’m looking at it now but I’m concerned about the built in filter in the back, how would I go about getting rid of that or securing a space for my sponge filter?

It comes with a fine sponge and spaces in between to house biomax and charcoal. In addition on the neighbouring compartment there is empty volume to house any additional filter media. So you do not need to buy an additional sponge filter

If you house these two compartments with filter media, this system will have a huge bioload when cycled.

I see! Ok! And how is the flow for a betta? Would I have to do any extra work to buffer the current? Or is it adjustable? Thank you for taking time to answer my questions

The outlet is bisecting, so there are two outlets whose directions are adjustable. They emerge from the same point and are 90 degrees apart. You can change their direction up, down left and right only minimally, but enough to have a low current on the surface (point the outlets downwards). Your betta should be fine.

As your betta will like breathing on the surface, this will be necessary

The top three inches of the aquarium glass is darkened using special tape. This is to reduce the bright reflection of the light from the water surface. So you see your betta on the surface only in a dark light. But you will see him everywhere else on the aquarium fine

Your replies are very helpful and concise! I’ll be measuring my desk space today to check and see if I’ll have enough room for the aquarium. Thank you for your patience in answering all my questions

I've actually been planning the same thing all the way down to the sponge filter. I already have the , , heater and thermometer hence why I was looking for something that came without a filter or equipment. After getting a recently for my saltwater tank and being incredibly impressed with a low-iron, rimless tank I decided I want to switch my betta to a nice rimless cube as well. I'm thinking of going with something like another IM Fusion 10 gallon without the built in filtration or a Mr. Aqua 7.5g.

Do you know if any of these tanks come with a lid? That seems to be the biggest issue I have when checking out tanks. I may end up getting the Imagitarium 6.8 gallon from Petco as it seems to suit my betta keeping needs as well as personal tastes.

Have you used sponge filters in the past? I’ve heard from many online sources as well as from Life With Pets that they’re the way to go for a betta.

It’s just that fluval is always so expensive :’(

I plan to make a DIY mesh lid just like the one I have over my saltwater tank. No more glass/acrylic tops for me anymore. That Imagitarium tank looks nice, but wouldn't meet my requirements of being low-iron glass and not having built in filtration.

I've used the sponge filter before but not with the betta. They're recommended often for bettas though because they do well in mechanical and biological filtering without creating strong water column turbulence or surface agitation. Mine has been doing fine with a HOB filter and a baffle though for the last year. Depends on the betta. Some have a harder time swimming than others.
