Last year my water hyacinths did not thrive. Two reasons, I think. Too much buffeting around the pond and the goldfish ate the roots off them.

This year, after deciding I had enough going on without arts and crafts, I purchased these mesh barrier rings from Drs Foster and Smith.

I wasn't sure when I received them because they aren't all that deep. But the hyacinths were already showing retrograde growth, so in they went.

What a difference. I added the second ring today because the first is chockablock with plants. And little goldfish. Yep. They make excellent hangouts for bitty fry. (None of which I moved. They all made their way by themselves.)

Even though the rings move around the pond, the plants are stationary, which they seem to appreciate. And the fish enjoy the shade they provide.
