75 Gallon Tank Really Round Danio

Gameynerd23

Hello, I posted close to a month ago about this green glofish zebra danio I have that is super round. I can't tell if it's gravid, has some bloat, or if it's just super fat. There's about 40 danios in the tank and they get small (for their group size) pinches of API tropical flakes twice, sometimes once, a day. They also peck on the shrimp pellets I feed their Dojo Loach tank mates, but the danios don't get a whole lot of the pellets before the Dojos gobble them all up. This danio that I'm concerned about swims around just fine, it's not acting out of the ordinary. It is pretty small for a danio. I figured if there was something like dropsy wrong with it, then it would have died by now. Some of the other danios are a little round in the belly, but they could just be gravid females. I don't think it's overfeeding because I try not to feed too much, but I can't really quantify a pinch of flakes and two pinches of shrimp pellets. I've occasionally given bloodworms as a treat, but I haven't in awhile. Sorry the pictures are grainy, but that just shows how active it still is. If it's just a deformed danio, then I'll keep an eye on it and try to keep it healthy.

Do you notice and pineconing? You can tell if you look at the fish from above and the scales stick out like a pinecone. I doubt it’s pregnant because it would have layers the eggs by now if it’s been a month

I haven't noticed any pineconing... I really don't know what's wrong with it, but it's acting OK, so maybe it's deformed.

Might be some sort of semi permanent bloating issue, or some kind of tumor of some sort. GloFish do seem to be more prone to weird issues. Whatever it is, it must not be contagious or deadly, as you mentioned, it would have killed the danio or spread by now.

Yeah, I was really just curious to know what was the matter, but I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot if the danio is acting OK and if it isn't affecting the health of the others or itself. I didn't know Glofish were more prone to strange issues. I like their bright colors, though, and giving them a big tank to live in since they're sold as novelties. I really feel for fish like that. So, I'll just take care of the round danio until it eventually passes.

Yeah, it's likely a mixture of the genetic modification along with the inbreeding that likely takes place to produce them in mass. I've also seen Zebra Danios with bloating like this before, so it's just something that seems to happen with them. It looks like you're caring for them very well, and they have great lives with you.
