Re-portioning Frozen Fish Food?

Hey everyone.

So I've decided to start feeding frozen food, especially now that I am going to have more fish than just a single betta in my smaller tanks. After buying some at the store, I was trying to cut off pieces of the "gum drop", and it was slipping and sliding, and just being a pain in general.

I was wondering if any of you have a particular way that you go about re-portioning frozen food? I'd like too be able to give my Betta's a treat, as well as feed it to the fish in my 40 gallon.

My current plan is to buy something like this:
I would thaw the frozen food and the redistribute it into these little cubes and refreeze. Then feed however many of these would be appropriate. Even just thawing one of these to give between my bettas would be easier than trying to shave off pieces constantly.

Any thoughts on a better way to do this? Or tips and what not? Thanks

I think your idea should work well. I thaw and refreeze the frozen blood worms and brine shrimp in order to feed small amounts.

My concern in thawing them is safety. Is the food still good? It's not good to thaw human food and then re-freeze it, so I have to wonder about the meats in fish food.

Hmmm, I don't know. But since its only thawed for maybe 5-10 minutes before it goes back in the freezer I'm gonna hope its ok, lol.

What about a small cheese grater to shave off little pieces at a time while it's still frozen then put the rest back in your freezer bag for the next meal? I don't use frozen foods ( although I should probably stat ) so i'm not too sure the form their in. Blocks or like you have said a gum drop shape.

Mine are gum drop shape which are very difficult to hold onto, I honestly would see myself grating my own fingers before they stayed where I wanted, lol. The fish love it, but its a bit of a pain.

I did end up buying the little cube tray, and re-portioned it in there and it works really well so far. The cubes a a great portion for me.

I usually just lay a folded over paper towel on the counter and take a paring knife to the large cube or round depending on what it was I bought. I push down on the blade with my other hand to split the cube.

I put the left over back in the form, reseal and put it back in freezer.

If you have other frozen foods like cyclops or rotifers save the plastic forms. I list those three specifically because the plastic form is small and shallow so they are a little easier to portion out. Just thaw and refreeze In them.

Did you try looking for minI ice cube trays? I’ve used those in the past for foods.

If you have a candy shop locally try looking there or in the candy section of your local craft store. Look for plastic chocolate molds that are small enough for your needs. You can thaw and refreeze in these as well. A word of caution: The molds typically are not dishwasher safe, they will shrivel, shrink, curl so watch the hot water.

Edit: noticed this is a slightly older post and didn’t see you tried the minI trays. Glad you found a solution.
