Hmm I would probably cut my input out from this conversation for now. I know little about America.. and England is such a green country that our lakes never get that bad. If it's obviously polluted, don't use it. I jus tg assumed most lakes (like the ones in the UK) are clean..

 

Yes Aquarius been out of there since 93 but I’m not lying and that stuff takes years (like 100s) to clean up. May look clean but the pcbs are probably off the chart. But we’re way off topic sorry.

Whales and Dolphins have returned to NY harbor in Waters that were deemed as quote "polluted" back in the 70s, 80s, 90s.. Environmental protection has done a lot to eliminate pollution and polluters. And has helped nature and wildlife rebound NYC...
No worries it was obvious from your comments that you've been gone for a long time and are not aware of these changes.. lol

 

Hmmm, try Central Park in Manhattan it has several lakes, ponds, streams. Flushing Meadows park in Queens or Prospect Park in Brooklyn. I have Van Cortland Park up by me it has a large lake and ponds.

I get duckweed from Harlem Meer in Central Park to feed my goldfish. I just bring an empty water bottle and fill it up. I get these tiny little crustaceans/daphnia-looking things with them, which my fishes eat too. Now I just grow my own. Before I had trouble keeping duckeed alive for some reason.

 

I will say it would be interesting to drop a rainbow or angle fish in lake water and see how it does. Gold fish, guppies, other hardy fish would more then likely be fine, because they often live in less then pristine water.
