Ratings? Points?? Trophies??????

Well, let me state right up front that I have been diagnosed with terminal technoplegia...which means that if I manage to turn on my computer and log onto a forum like this one without burning down my house, I consider it a minor triumph.

Having said that, the intricacies of Fishlore are leaving me a bit flummoxed. I keep getting Alerts that someone has quoted me, or has posted in a thread that I am watching, or blah, blah, blah. No problem with that...but the Alerts keep on piling up and I can't figure out how to clear them.

On top of that, I notice that I am gaining Points (not sure what good they do me...) and Ratings that seem to fall into a dozen or so categories. I'm neutral about those; they don't seem to be hurting anything so I just ignore them. But now, I just noticed that I apparently have been rating other peoples posts! Huh??? How did that happen? I have apparently rated some posts in threads in which I haven't even posted. Somebody asked a perfectly reasonable question about shrimp, and according to the 'puter I rated that as funny!!!???

Can't a person simply log on, read a few threads, maybe post a question or answer or suggestion...without being drawn into a swirling maelstrom of computer-age social-networking face-book-liking gobbledy-gook???? I thought that's what I was doing...but nooooo…..

So, if anyone feels offended by a rating which I have bestowed upon a post of theirs, please accept my apologies. I didn't know I did it...I don't know how I did it...and I certainly meant no insult.

Carry on carrying on...

To give someone a rating, you can click on one of 11 little icons at the bottom right of anyone's post. They all mean something different: Funny, useful, creative, etc.

Those ratings add up on anyone's profile, and generally act as a way for other people to see how active they are on the website, how helpful other people perceived their posts to be, and overall, their general status on the site. For some, it can be a good indicator of whether or not you should take someone's advice: if they have a lot of posts but very little positive ratings, you might want to question the advice they're giving. If they have hundreds or thousands of positive ratings, you can generally be assured that the person is generally knowledgeable, has been here for a long time, and has been helpful to many others.

You can get trophy points from random things, like the number of times you've posted, the number of times someone liked one of your posts, etc. They're not really as useful in my opinion.

I enjoyed reading this post, it had me laughing! Happy fish keeping!

Very useful...Thank you!

I just rated your post as Informative; it's the first rating I have ever given on purpose! I'll have to watch the old-age finger-twitching in future...

I rated your original post as funny because you have a humorous way with words. SM1199 gave you a great rundown as to what it is all about. I agree with the trophy points. They aren't actually useful for much of anything but don't take away from anything either.

The VIP title is nice. Lol. But even the title only means how many posts you have made.

Dude. You have twice as many ratings as posts and that was your first?

The ratings on your profile are the ones that other people have given to you, he's talking about the ones he has given others.

To be honest I hate titles and ratings.
Only thing what I like is a "like" or a PM if one of my advises appear to work out / is appreaciated.

A rating I would like to see is one that would get votes on. Something that shows that their advise for the most part is right. Like you. I and most on here know you wouldn't steer anyone in the wrong direction or offer unsound advise. And if you don't know you admit you don't know.

!

There was a disagree button once upon a time, and it was bad bad news. Sadly people misused it, and starting using it out of spite. Just disagreeing with everything a person posts just because they don't like them for instance.

It was determined that disagreeing usually requires a response anyway. If you disagree, then WHY do you disagree?

Whereas, the "agree" Button is helpful because if you agree, you don't need to just repeat what was already said. Unless you have something to add.

Its unfortunate that people can't use a disagree button in a mature fashion. But it'll never happen.

Well, I have a red mark on my forehead from face-palming. I read back through and deciphered the intricacies of this thread . In case you couldn't tell, I was very tired when I posted last . Jafa you live in Australia?! BTW, welcome to Fishlore (I try to say hello to all of the new people)!
Don't worry, the people of Fishlore will help you with your addiction to this site once it starts .

Yes on the top of this page go to the left and hit aquarium forums. Find where you would like to post and open that section up. Go to the bottom of that section and on the right there will be a black bar that says start new thread. That it hit that bar and begin. .

Unless they're a long standing member, before the ratings. Lots of posts, but didn't have the ratings system

Agree, but the key word is "generally". Some members with hundreds or thousands of posts/positive ratings have quite a bit of
swirling maelstrom of computer-age social-networking face-book-liking gobbledy-gook????
so eloquently stated.
