Random Snail from last LFS trip still alive!

Ended up with a tiny snail somehow in my last fish purchase. I put it in the tank and hadn't seen it for a week. Low and behold when I was doing my clean/water change today I spotted it! It's so small it's impossible to keep track of. How fast do they grow?

What kind is it? What are the characteristics?

Depending on the snail, they can grow pretty rapidly. My MTS snail had babies over a week ago - at first they looked like pepper flakes but now they have doubled their size and I can actually tell what they are!

If you have any pictures, that would help to identify them!

If you don't want it in your tank...get rid of it fast. That is how I started with my pesky snails, I thought, "Oh, I have a baby snail" very cute, I will let it live...low and behold...I have many.

That's right, they are asexual aren't they? Hmm...with no bottom feeders planned I want to keep it but I also don't want 100 either. Decisions, decisions.

I would get rid of it ASAP before it is too late

No. The shell isn't that sharply spiraled. It is more of a slow sweeping spiral, but it is not a curl(like a ram's horn). Any ideas? Shell appears to be light brown. Sorry I can't be more decriptive. I've only seen it twice lol. It's maybe pea sized if it's lucky.

If its more round, maybe a pond snail? Can you get a picture?

BTW - pond snails can live through almost anything! I have 3 of them in a jar that's been there for weeks, just a anarchis plant and water I keep adding to it every now and then. I plan on taking it to the lfs for their goldfish to dine on. Just don't know when.... LOL

That's it! On an unrelated note, just spotted white spots on my GBRs pectoral fins. What the heck do I treat with? She's not looking good. Resting on the bottom and swimming is lackluster. She will swim up and then fall down and bounce on the bottom. It appears to just be on the pectoral fins. Also rapid breathing.

You should start a new thread in the diseases section for that if you want helpful replies.
There is a natural way to cure it but I don't remember where the info on that is. Someone else will probly tell you if you put the second thread up. My fish have ich right now, though, and seem to be responding well to Kordon Ich Attack. Be warned, though - it SMELLS.

Pond snails can reproduce very rapidly. I would smash any that you find, if you don't want them.

I was waiting for AP to suggest the "Hammer" or garbage disposal LOL

They have pretty weak shells and smash against the glass easily. Most people consider pond snails pests. I don't mind them. I actually had a hard time finding one to get a picture of, my Assassins have decimated their population

Thanks just posted in the diseases section. I'm sure it's been sick since arrival but I was just able to spot it. Hope I can do something

I know that the white spots on the fish for ICH is actually the body covering up the bad bacteria that embedded themselves into the fish. If the fish is showing the white spots, then you can not harm the bad bacteria at that time, as they are protected by the body. When the white spots go away, you can then treat for ICH because they are in the water, and not in the fish.

If you treat with medicine, make sure you are not using any active carbon at that time, as it will remove the medicine.

You can treat ICH naturally by raising the tank water to 86F for 2 weeks, and keep the water extremely clean, and that will kill of the bad bacteria

pond snails will only reproduce fast if you are over feeding your fish. And thus they can act as a barometer of sorts: if your snail population increases too rapidly, cut down on feeding the tank. they are fairly harmless, and I kind of liked them - unfortunately mine all died in my ph crash, and I kind of miss them. However, Malaysian Trumpet Snails are a better snail to have than pond snails, since MTS dig in the sand and also look better, so I am glad my MTS survived, and prefer them. Still you may find that you too grow to like pond snails. If not, get some assassin snails, which are snails that kill snails, and they will control your pond snail population and the assassins will not reproduce fast.

sounds like trouble...jk. I think if you don't overfeed your fish then you are good. It give you an indication that you are though....so either way, you win.

alternately if your tank was well established with lots of algae it won't matter how little the fish are fed the snails will explode all over the tank anyway.

Little to no algae that is visible. Hopefully I don't end up knee deep in snails.
