Random Bubble Nest..

Hey All,

So one of my Bettas used to love making bubble nests. He used to have plants that rested on the surface that made it very easy to anchor the bubble nest to them and they would stay for awhile. I haven’t been able to get any surface plants lately so I haven’t been seeing any bubble nests. Anyways, I was doing water top offs on all my tanks today and went outside for about 15 minutes and when I came back he had built a pretty good sized bubble nest. Any reason why he would just suddenly make one? I think it’s drifted over to the filter by now unfortunately but I’m thinking maybe raising the water made the surface more still? I don’t know, just was kinda surprised cause I haven’t seen him make one in so long..

I’m not sure if this will help but my betta does the same thing randomly makes nests like that. Sometimes he will do it all the time then stop for a little while then make another one a few weeks later. Other times he will make a nest and not complete it. I’ve heard that if they feel content they will make nests.

Yeah mine does the same that’s funny. I wonder if there’s certain times of year that they do the bubble nests more often because of breeding? Maybe something to do with their internal clock? Someone who knows more about Betta Fish will hopefully educate us lol

Hey Everyone,

I have my filter on my Betta tanks baffled but there’s still a tiny bit of current to where if they make a bubble nest it slowly gets pulled into the filter. Does anyone know of anything I can float on the surface of the water that they can attach there nest to or stop the flow more? I used to have floating plants that did the trick but can’t get any right now. I was also thinking about using Almond Leaves but I don’t like the tannin color it adds. I know the bubble nests aren’t really necessary since I’m not breeding but I really do think they enjoy making and guarding them. Any advice or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

I heard people use bubble wrap and styrofoam cups when breeding to help males build a bubble nest.

I believe there are some other leaves you can use that don't leech tannins, like hazel, beech, and birch.

Suction cup feeding rings. You can also use suction cups and fishing line to keep something floating in one spot to kind of divide the tank. I did something similar with old lake driftwood that would never sink so my african butterfly fish had separate territory in ny 65. Now that they have an entire 180 to hunt, they hang out on the same corner all the time lol.
