Ram Cichlid Reality Show - thread about their antics

Since I find that I'm always creating threads about all the ridiculous things my breeding pair do, I thought- what the heck, let's just create a main thread so I can put everything there!

Synopsis: Follow Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid as they navigate relationship troubles and raising a family. Eating their children, bothering their neighbors, and fighting amongst each other are all in a day's work for these two.

Episode 1: Mr. Ram Cichlid is in the dog house. The Mrs. won't let him near the kids. He spends his time sulking in the corner and trying to sneak over to the Ram Cichlid family home. Meanwhile, Mrs. Ram Cichlid is watching the fry and chasing all the other fish to the other 2/3 of the tank. Two guppies have died suspicious deaths and Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid has been implicated. The juniors are doing well and are nibbling algae off plants and also eating baby brine shrimp. So far this has been their most successful spawn yet. Usually things go south before this stage.

Stay tuned for the next episode.

Episode 2: Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid's relationship woes continue. Mrs. Ram Cichlid is getting increasingly unhinged. Observers are wondering: how long can she raise the fry alone? Will Mr. Ram Cichlid ever get custody back? Can the marriage last? Will they eat their children like they did last week? We must sit and wait for the drama to unfold. This can't be kept up for long. The cardinal tetras are most likely to be chased away when they wander too closely. The threadfin rainbows can linger for awhile. Also, the guppies who normally spend a lot of time near the surface can get away with encroaching on Mrs. Ram Cichlid's territory.. Until they foolish swim down. Their large tails make them easy targets. Mr. Ram Cichlid has stopped his aggressive behavior temporarily. This is obv a Paris and Nicole situation.

Lol, I'm sorry, this is just such an interesting thread! Especially when you said, "Will they eat their children again like they did last week?" I must seem so heartless........

They seriously did eat their children last week. I was so mad. Everything was going lovely and they were being a great mommy/daddy duo. Then I look over at the tank after not paying attention for an hour and Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid are at the top of tank, begging for food. No fry to be seen. Until then at least one of them had been with the fry near the substrate at all times. So I'm frantically looking for the babies(I even checked the filter) and Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid are looking at me like "GIMME FUD NAO." Jerks. I wouldn't be so upset but they had been terrorizing the rest of the tank the entire time and like, if someone is going to put that much effort into something- shouldn't it be assumed they are going to finish the task? -.-

THIS IS A SHOCKER!

Episode 3: A lot has happened recently. The narrator woke up this morning to find Mr. Ram Cichlid in a corner, a guppy with shredded fins; and here's the kicker- NO BABIES. This time the perp is clearly Mrs. Ram Cichlid bc Mr. Ram Cichlid was banished at the time. Now that we know WHO did it(I always thought it was Mr. Ram Cichlid eating the babies because of his aggression.) The Mrs was in the opposite corner and hiding in the Ram Cichlid home. Guilty conscious much? I for one, think this is for the best. After what happened last week, my expectations were very low. IMO, Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid need to work on their troubled relationship.

I've decided that from now on, I'll be confiscating a few of the babies if I want some to live. Parenthood is too big a responsibility for these two. I'm thinking I'd get a 10 gallon for the fry if I choose to raise them? It's just that the pair is constantly spawning so I feel that I'd get overrun with babies. So I'd only save a few every once in a while.

They make me so mad! They terrorize the tank every spawn and for what? -.-

Yeah, those two definitely aren't suited for parenthood if they terrorize the neighbors so that they can eat their own children.........

They need to divorce. Or maybe one of them can have an affair.

Episode 4: Things are getting better for the couple. They are still not happy with each other but they are swimming together. They haven't bothered the other fish lately too, which is out of character. Even the despised cardinal tetras haven't gotten chased around!

Mr. Ram Cichlid is about twice the size of Mrs. Ram Cichlid, this I find disconcerting. Surely he shouldn't be growing so much faster than her? He's grown a lot since I got him but she hasn't. Sheesh, Mr. Ram Cichlid must have done something really bad to make Mrs. Ram Cichlid this mad at him. They've never fought this long before. They are a young breeding couple so I guess fighting is normal? They've gotten aggressive recently. To me and the other fish. I can tell the other fish are afraid of them. D=

I watched a video on YT about a wolf cichlid pair and the male was awful. The female had her own PVC pipe to hide in that was too small for the male to get into because he'd bother her. She spent the entire time hiding in the pipe and looking terrified.

Well, glad they're doing better. Maybe their relationship can't take the strain of children?

Yah, that's the angle I'm going for as the producer.

Mr. Ram Cichlid is being brutal to Mrs. Ram Cichlid. I've never seen I'm this violent to her. She doesn't have any physical injuries but she is emotionally distressed. He won't let her near the clutch of eggs. When I came home from work and turned on their aquarium light they were mouth fighting(?) and then pecking at each other.

Season 2 Episode 1

Mr. Ram Cichlid & Mrs. Ram Cichlid had a rough day yesterday, but towards the evening they stopped totally hating each other and began to work together to care for the eggs. Right now they are taking turns fanning the eggs(to prevent them from getting taken over by bacteria) They take shifts. One is always with the eggs and the other is chasing the neighbors away and being a total jerk! Isn't working together fun? Stay tuned for the next episode!

Season 2 episode 2

Mrs. Ram Cichlid is having a ladies night out and has left Mr. Ram Cichlid in charge. The Mrs. is hanging out in some wisteria and eating algae. Maybe they had another argument? Another notable development is some of the eggs have gone missing. There are still a few dozen left but it's very small compared to what they've accomplished previously. The eggs are starting to develop eyes and Mr. Ram Cichlid is pacing around the egg laying rock.. And as I'm writing this Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid just had a physical altercation. Guess they haven't reconciled their differences after all. :;b

Season 2 episode 3

RIP babies. It was never meant to be. The egg laying rock is now empty, there are no fry to be seen, and Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid are still having irreconcilable differences.

Aw, poor babies...... although, I think I would be having issues with my spouse too if there was cannibalism of our own children present amongst us.......

Season 2 Episode 4

This is going to be a "Get to Know You" episode featuring Mr. & Mrs. Ram Cichlid! Interview time!

What do you like to do in your spare time(when you're not fighting or breeding)?
Mr: I like to poop and stuff my face with anything. It doesn't matter if technically it's not food. Edible is subjective, IMO.
Mrs: I'm currently very passionate about gardening and bullying the tetras.

Is there any reason in particular that you eat your children?
Mrs: It's so difficult to take care of a family. Sometimes, through no fault of our own, things happen..
Mr: Nomnomnomnom

Who are your favorite neighbors?
Mrs: We find the threadfins the least annoying. They are so good at minding their own business(unlike the guppies) and not getting in the way(like the dumb tetras).

Would you like to comment about the recent murders of guppies that you are a suspect in?
Mr: No comment. We are concluding this interview.

Rawr, I eats u.

P.S. They did it again. I found Mr. Ram Cichlid like this early this morning. It looks like a good spawn, maybe these ones will live long enough to swim.
