Ram Cichlid Blog

Well I just got some rams! I had one pair a couple weeks ago but the male died soon after I bought them. So I was stuck with a female. One of my breeder friends in Hong Kong was trying to convince me to buy some of his EBRs at the time. I was interested but soon lost interest after I found out they were balloon rams. I strongly appose balloon fish for various reasons. I won't get into that right now LOL. Anyway I said no so when I bought some angels from him he sent me a 'sample' male to keep my female company. Basically he was trying to get me to buy some more from him. So I just received the male yesterday and he is doing fine. I had checked on my female a couple hours before the male died and she had absolutely gorgeous bright colors and was happily swimming around my tank. Well... soon after the male got situated into his tank I went to get the female ram and found her dead. So I went out and bought another female (rams get lonely fast it seems) and now I have a young female Ram and a bigger male Electric Blue Balloon Ram. Here are some pictures.

EEEEEE "Ram blog". Phrase of the day.

As I stated earlier
"YAY fishy! Booo Human corruption of an animals natural form to suit their own financial and aesthetic needs!"

The lady is pretty, don't they normally have rounder bellies, or is it because shes young.

She is still really young and was underfed. She should be back in action in no time. Also... I got a little surprise. The male ram was shipped with a Java Fern in the bag and now I have two little things that came out of the Java Ferns. Can anyone guess what they might be?

It's up to you. Mine have never done terribly well on their own but I do know often people keep them on their own without issues. I dunno why mine are moody lol.

Very nice rams! Sorry to hear that your other female died.

Let me guess. Baby balloon rams? Maybe they will be normal rams, I here that happens with balloon breeding.

If they do breed the vast majority of the offspring should be normal body shaped. Ballooning is a recessive gene.

Leaf fish? They are truly creepy looking....

Wait... do YOU know what they are? or are you asking a legitimate question? because then, I demand pics.

Also, on balloon genetics a b(balloon ram) and a B(regular ram)

so bbxbb would make all balloon offspring, or would all the babies just be dead?

Contrary, the offspring of say two parents that are het for balloonism (BbxBb) then 1 out of 4 would be completely free of the condition right? or is it poly genetic.

I have no idea what they are. I'm just playing in one of Rogues guessing games. I suspect the answer will be revealed in about 2-3 days.

Of course I know what they are! Don't be silly. After all I did own at the ID game. The thread is still up if you need to refresh your memory lol.

That is crude genetics but yes, generally that's what happens. They usually do BbXbb to get balloon offspring. But not all bbXbb babies die. Some do but not all.

And no they are not leaf fish. Imagine, they hid in a Java fern. They are creepy. AND they are grayish brown.

I have no idea, but as for SK's question... bbxbb would only be a fatal gene combination if balloon-ism is a sex-linked trait. This is why females generally aren't color-blind, and there generally aren't male calico or tortie cats; RARELY one will survive, but otherwise not.

Well I ment fatal in the idea that the fish would be SO deformed it would kill them.
Rope fish
Needle fish
Gar
Farlowella catfish

Oh, I see. I really don't know a lot about balloon fish, but I have taken genetics classes. ;D In general, a genotype of two recessive alleles of a sex-linked trait is referred to as a "lethal gene." That's why it's actually the heterozygote that displays the phenotype in question...IE calico cats are heterozygous for the calico gene, because if they were homozygous, they likely wouldn't survive.

Anyway.. back on topic ;D

Is it a fish that you are going to breed?

I think I'm going to stick with one Ram for right now until I get the email about Electric Blues

SK got it! But he cheated lol. It's a Black KuhlI Loach. There are two of them. So now I don't know what to do lol.

ZumI and SK, bbXbb sometimes do not survive because they are born with what I call 'extreme balloonness'. In simple words, they are deformed to an extent where they cannot compete for food or swim around well ect.

AmazonPassion, I do not intend to breed them but if they breed they breed. I won't separate them to keep them from breeding but I probably won't spend hours conditioning them to breed.

Dawwwwww he's so ugly he's cute lol. That isn't actually a balloon goldfish, just a very fat one haha. I don't think Balloon Goldies have ever been successfully bred.
