Rainbow fish identification

Jl29

Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance as I know this gets asked a lot. I have 6 allegedly boesemani rainbow fish, but I've noticed the last few evenings one apparent female boesemani has been showing extremely dark blue colours (but no yellow or orange at all) and initiating standoffs with the two textbook males, which are smaller than her(?him). I wonder if it is a male of a different strain? I've had them all about a month and they're all still relatively small.

Here's Blue mystery (sorry for poor photo):

Definite male:

It's not a source of concern- I just find these fish beautiful and fascinating, and appreciate any insights.

Thanks a lot
John

Look like normal, though young, M. bosemani to me.

So it's just a young male waiting for more orange pigment to turn up? Or do some of them have only blue?
Thanks for the info

The orange takes some time to develop.
